Hi all,

Received two new Buck 302's today and I have a question. Is it normal for Dymondwood not to match concerning color etc? One scale is dark charcoal and the other scale has very little color to it.
Your thoughts would be appreciated.

This has been a subject before and the short answer is yes. I don't have any Dymondwood knives but have seen a lot of pictures of them.

I got a 301 for XMas, and they are a little different. I never gave it much thought though considering the material.

Use it, and soon you won't pay any attention to it

Yes, even though Dymondwood is only partly wood, it is subject to a lot of the variations that go with natural products.

I've noticed a little bit of difference in the dymondwood I've seen in person but nothing drastic.

Chris,

Photo number 2 and 3 appear to be on the same knife as do 1 and 4. The # 4 scale is the 'different' one. If both scales looked that way, I think I might like it.

I either like a Dymondwood knife scale or I don't want it.....with black sawcut or yellow the scales are just part of the whole. But with the variability of the DW scales they can make or break the knives attraction in my eye. I like the lighter grey DW scales, I do not like the almost solid black DW scales. I also liked the way they were finished in the 301 single blade prototypes, contoured and shiny.

I do not know how the scales are assembled at the factory. Whether they are put on by hand or in some sort of pre-assemblly auto part process. If people assembled, then you have to know whether the techs. are told to not worry about differences or to take time to try and match some scales as much as possible within reasonable time limit. Were probably dealing with a daily quota per person......

I have a 301 with a very light grey face scale and a solid black reverse scale....go figure.
This is one of the hazards of buying knifes thru the mail.....I once looked thru every 303 in the cabinet at Bass Pro, luckly it was a slow day so I didn't get dirty looks and comments...... One of yours looks normal to me, the other with the one wilder scale isn't bad, but the wild scale should have been toned down a little for a better match. Or another wild one grabbed to match. Then I would have really wanted that knife for myself. I have one on order will let you know what I get.

My original set. I like the 301 scale the best.

Thanks for all the great feedback! I'm new to this scale material and I have learned a lot today :D

My custom shop 110 in blue diamondwood has drastically different coloring on each side. I wasn't thrilled at first, but then realized what an awesome knife I had made. And it doesn't affect the cutting ability of the knife one bit! :-)

I'll take real wood, thank you very much.

Never been a fan of the various plywoods used on knives.

Chris,

If you want more info. just to be in the know, here is the Dymondwood home page.

BG,
I understand the need for cost hold down in these 'mass produced' folding knife series. I will agree with you in that I "prefer" other scale materials, but I also expect to have to pay for those scales also. Give me choice in elk or jigged bone vs. DW, no contest as long as I can afford to pay for it. A whole bunch of folks aren't gonna pay a lot of dough for a everyday pocket knife. Thats why I like Buck to make an occasional 'natural material' scaled special 300 along with the bill paying big production models. I am thinking next year would be a good year for one.....with a warcliff blade..

Soooooo, is Cherrywood Dymondwood the same as Charcoal? Good chance of mismatch in scale colors?

The thing that bothers me about plywood scales...they always made a pocket knife that had real wood handles before,so why can't they do it now?I don't like laminates, including the regular 110 model, thats why i always buy an old 110 with real wood,or a new one with stag or horn. The gen 5 charcoal wood is all but faded right out, from repeated washing after use.I won't buy any of the new pocket knives because of those foolish looking blue buck emblems in the handles,i know its a buck knife,i don't need the guy across the room to be able to read buck on my handle,i much rather like the traditional logo of the blacksmith and anvil.

Yeah......things have changed a lot and I don't like it.

Yes, that new logo sucks.

Not buying too many new knives these days.

Why would I? Cheap materials, ugly materials, cheap steel........

I'm just a grouchy old man and I don't see things getting better!

:D

I buy quite a few knives ,no new buck knives though, all of them are ebay knives or private collections, and are old stock.its funny because when i get one,i automatically check it over, and i'm always happy with them, every new one is never the way it should be.

Buck really should have a "Retro" line. You know.....the Canal Street type of thing--only better.

Old school knives for old school guys.

Since most of us old school guys have the money to pay a little more for some basic quality in materials........it could be a profitable niche.

Or........Mr. Buck Knives.......you can just watch us buy only old e-Bay knives and get madder and more and more disgusted at your bizarre new logos, materials, and "knives."

;)

Oh well, maybe the Chinese will start buying your new knives......big market if you can tap it.

Seeing how persistent negativity is bad for your health, it might be good for you to try a new brand of knives since you don't like any of the new models. Maybe the knife company you like will have a forum and you can spend a lot of time there!
