Charles Jones

Nathan the Machinist Nathan the Machinist did you ever make the 3V kukri?

We have our steel custom made to our specifications and I made an error when I ordered the plate. I get less cross rolling on applications like this so the layout of the knife in the sheet dimension has to be oriented correctly to have the grain running the correct direction for a piece like this and I made a brain fart with my plate dimensions for the rolling direction. I'll figure out something else to do with that material. I will order more plate, rolled correctly for this application, with my next material order, which will be around the end of this year.

this thread is pointless without pics!
here's kinda sorta what the CPKhuk will end up looking like, (this is the proof of concept)

I don't have inside information, nor do I set Nathan's pricing, of course. But, I would budget at least $600 for one of these Khukris.

What are my options for reputable blade smiths who will properly heat treat a custom 3V kukri for me?

Teesac81 have you tried perusing the Himalayan Imports subforum?
Great traditional tools at affordable prices..

Has anyone got real life experience with Charles Jones blades? He’s got a kukri he makes in 3V that I am considering. Mostly I want to be sure his blades are heat treated for optimized toughness and edge holding. Also, knowing if he honors his warranty would be helpful. Thanks in advance!
Sorry I this is late but I have two knives from Charles Jones and both are phenomenally made!!!
I have his “Sole Survivor” in W2 that he did a custom hamon line on and then his specific heat treat cycling and it cuts astonishingly well! I put a 15degree edge on it and used it to prune some up to 1” shrubs then cleaned it off and it was still a razor… The edge retention is uncanny for W2 and more like 52100??
I picked up an absurd collaboration 11” SanMai from Ukrainian bladesmith using K390 for the core and 440c, and Cyril Nicholes who customizes pukko’s and that Sole Survivor almost cuts as well?? So what ever Charles Jones is doing with that steel he is making it defy the numbers in my experience!!!
I also have a 4.5” drop point in san mai with 5160 and 440…w g2 scales and it too has held up phenomenally well!! I put maybe a 17… 34degree edge on that and used it in December to debark a bunch of hardwood I was stacking and hit several hidden nails… It took minor damage, mainly rolling but there was some micro-chipping, only visible under magnification but I didn’t even need to take any steel off to get the edge back, and only had to use a few strokes starting w 800grit on the XLRILK edge system.
I have absolutely zero doubt these will last several lifetimes! And I can’t wait for my next blade from him..
He has several videos on YouTube showing how he makes each steel and the heat treats as well..
He’s young but I feel he’s no doubt a savant and will make a huge impact on knife making over the next decades so I truly believe I’ll be priced out of his market soon!!
Get them while you can!!!
