After seeing Charles Vestal's work here, and loving the Loveless style that I do, decided to request one last year.

This has a 5 1/2" blade....Bob Loveless/Harry Archer had a REVOLUTIONARY idea for the original Chute knife as a cutter for a parachute/last ditch fighting/survival knife, but the extra 1" extends the reach, gives that much more cutting surface, and looks great to boot.

This one is not done yet, but is done enough for a preview:

I was concerned that Charles might miss the fine points of Loveless work, as many do(finely tapered tang, shaping of guard, sculpting of handle scales, rounding of choil area)...this fear was unfounded, while this is a Loveless pattern, Charles has NAILED it, while enjoying the freedom to interpret it as well.

I'm really looking forward to this one!

THAT is MY kind of knife!!! Chute knives is my absolute favorite style of fb!! That is one exceptional example.

Steven that is a beauty.... and the extra inch just looks so right!

I am going to call it the "Garsson Variation";)

Super clean very nice chute knife STeven. Does the tip have slightly more upsweep than on most Loveless style knives. It might be the pic but I like it

steven,

very nice indeed! the chute and the drop point hunter are my favourite loveless designs. shame is that i have never had the opportunity to handle a knife made by the master himself, "only" a drop point hunter made by john young i am happy to own.

could you please elaborate on the fine points you are mentioning, like the guard shape or the rounded choil? i have never thought much about those details... now it seems as if there's some homework to do!

thanks, and best regards,
hans

Let's let the picture speak, and see what your questions are after that, Hans!

I jacked the pic from Michael Donato, Knifepurveyor.com

That looks great. I have a couple of knives on order from Charles. One is a chute knife and the other a large fighter. The fighter is being made in the next month or so. I can hardly wait.

Very nice. Always surprised when you share pictures. I don't know much about these styles of knives (Loveless.. etc) but I can appreciate how clean they are. Nice looking wood also.

Awesome Steven! Was looking at Charles's NY Special recently. One still on the list to get.

Can't wait to see more pics when done. Its one sweet piece

thanks, steven! i was looking through some pictures of loveless knives. charles' chute knife looks to be very close to the original, except for the blade length (nice proportions!) and the grind line along the flat side of the blade which seems to end a little below the tip on loveless' chutes (why is that, btw?). don't know if i am right, could be the pictures. more remaining questions will be asked in a few weeks...

best regards,
hans

It's a very nice looking knife Steven, and the Chute is one of my favorite designs too. Coop has taken many pictures of Mr. Vestal's knives, and they usually come with descriptions speaking to their quality. Good to hear it from you as well..

Are they all mirrored finished to use as refelectors? I was always curious about that. I don't know that much about the history of Bob's knives, still learning as I go so forgive me if that is a newbie question. Best Regards, Rich
