Can anyone point out a company or person who can perform either of these tests? How many samples would need to be submitted?I'm not looking to select the uber best blade steel, and I understand the limitations of the tests - just wanting to locate a facility to do the tests.

There are several around. Which one you choose depends on price and how you intend to supply the samples and whether you want notched, unnotched, reduced section, etc. Some labs have machining capability, and charge for it. If you dont need it, then you have more options. Standard sample size is 3 individual specimens.

Also ASTM standard is 10mmx10mmx55mm. There are other standard sizes, but that depends on the lab. I believe it is called out in ASTM A370.

ATS Labs. Various locations in the south east
M&P Lab. New York & South Carolina
S&ME. Raleigh, NC
Element/Stork labs. Nationwide

I have used Element/Stork, ATS, M&P, and did some of the testing @ S&ME when I worked there. All can give you good results, but since this may not be standard for them, be sure to let them know exactly what you want done. I'm sure there are others, but I have direct experience with those 4.

Thanks guys, that should point me in the right direction to send some emails and arrange testing this spring.
