Thanx Vassili, great info. :)
Spyderco is doing a couple of short runs in ZDP-189 FRN models to provide an inexpensive opportunity for knife aficianados to experience the steel.

The Caly jr and the Delica. both will be available this year.

WOW! I like to have one of this! I'll backorder it right now if possible.

Thanks, Vassili.

People are saying that ZDP-189 is just as tough as anything else, but Hattori's own website says otherwise: http://www.hatta.co.jp/zdp.html The bottom has a little thing that says charpy (in Japanese), and then compares the ZDP at 67 Rc against ATS-34 at 60Rc. The ZDP is less than half as tough. My guess is that at 66-67 Rc it isn't exactly easy to sharpen either. I'd say S90V is still the king of edge retention, much tougher, and I'd guess both are equally hard to sharpen. Sal Glesser also said in another post that S90V and ZDP were right together on the CATRA test.

Was it straight up ZDP-189 or a laminate? Spyderco's sprint run is using laminates of two different variations - ZDP-189 with 420 and ZDP-189 with ATS-34. We don't know how thick the ZDP-189 core will be, so it's a bit much to be speculating on the final toughness. There's an article in the February 2005 issue of Blade about ZDP-189. It's pretty good except for they err in stating that Spyderco is doing a short run of solid ZDP-189 blades. D'oh!

Plain ZDP-189.

I don't think that is decided yet. At least I haven't ready Sal or anybody else from Spyderco mention it. But the way Sal was talking about ZDP I would be surprised if it was less than Rc65.
