Alright knife dudes, I’ve been interested in getting peoples opinions on a VS. The Chaves Ultramar Redencion 229 Tanto full Ti VS the Chris Reeve Umnumzaan Tanto.

What would you choose & why?
What knife do you think will be more reliable in the long run when it comes to hard use?
What knife do you think will ultimately last longer and why?

josiahg52 josiahg52 More then cutting boxes, opening packages and food prep. Outdoor use if you were ever in the wilderness and had to complete any possible task you may need to use your knife for.

An Umnumzaan tanto along with a 5-6” fixed blade in 3v. I know the latter wasn’t supposed to be part of the gear, but if I’ve an unknown set of circumstances to deal with there’s no folder I’d depend on exclusively. I might just take my Mnandi instead of the umnum to save weight. Sorry for being of no help.

I suppose I could be more specific with a scenario. Let’s say you’re THROWN into the wilderness with nothing on you and one of those little Super Mario boxes pops up and it’s got an Umnumzaan and a Redencion in it but you only get one. Which one do you want if it’s the only tool you’ll have?

All other things being equal (and I may be incorrect about this, and if so I apologize), but I believe the Chaves is subbed out to Reate - a fine manufacturer to be sure. But I would prefer to support CRK as a U.S. manufacturer. I’m sure Chaves has good reasons to use Reate, but I’m guessing margins have a lot to do with it.

I feel ya. The politics side of things is irrelevant to me as I own many Chaves knives and the Zaan already.

The Umnumzaan came out in 2008 and has been proven with time. I don't know anything about the Redencion but even assuming it's great I'd pick the one that's been on the market over a decade with no signs of stopping.

I’m a big fan of Chaves….owning several. The decision for me narrows down to bearings vs. washers, M390 vs. S45VN and US made vs. Chinese. I consider the steel to be a wash, but the washers, and US mfg/parts availability easily give the win to CR.

(However, I personally favor and carry a full size Spartan SHF as a “hard use” folder.)

I’m sorry. Reate isn’t like any other Chinese company. They have VERY high standards and their knives are incredible! I do understand how a lot of people feel about the US made thing. That’s great. Don’t miss out on a fantastic knife just for that!
Reate and WE are the gold standard in Chinese manufacturing.

Zaan is a great and well built knife but I sold mine because I didn't like how difficult it is to open. The thumb stud sits against the lock bar and you have to do this weird straight forward motion which results in a full power thumb flick every time. There's no rolling it open like..say an Insingo. But again a high quality knife.

Umnumzaan - IF tanto is an option.
If not, I'll say neither and hope I find another box to look in.
Frankly, I would politely decline the 229 if it was offered to me for free.
