I'm hoping that someone can point me towards some cheap 440v, I can't afford ( or need for that matter ) the minimum amount from Crucible.

Second part of that is: I'm starting my first few knives using files and my dremel. The first one is almost done and made from 440c. 440c was not a problem to work, but given that I am not using a grinder, should I even bother with 440v.

What are some other steels I *shouldn't* bother with, given my current equipment.

One last one, what's the deal with S7? It's available pretty cheap everywhere and seems to have decent edge holding and tremendous impact resistance

Thanks guys.

Dan

Texas Knifemakers Supply has 440V. The last time I checked it was $28/foot for 1 1/2" X 1/8". In my opinion, there is better steel out there. I have had problems with the edge chipping. This is just my personal experience with it though.

D2 is a good steel to try and is not that expensive.

Ray,

Size: 1/8 x 1-1/2 x 36 S7 Oversize
Part: 02615 at toolanddie.com $22

Grade S7 Steel Oversize Ground Flat Stock 1/8" Thick, 1-1/2" Width, 1-1/2' Length $ 20.40 Each at Mcmaster

I don't ever here anyone mention this steel, I wonder why?

CL,

My favorite knives are 440v and that includes others made from D2, and s30v. For small slicers, I just can't think of a better steel. I'm thinking that 440v HT'd by Bos, has got to be pretty impressive.

Thanks guys,
Dan

Dan, I don't recall anyone using it either come to think of it. Think someone had done a post latly on S-5. I need more steel like I need a hole in the head but I always like to try something different. Ray

I think I remember Rob Frink saying he used S7 on a folder he made. I'm not sure if he posted a follow up on how the blade was holding up.

Rob???? Care to share.

Upon digging further, on crucible and other sources, it seems that S7's edge holding is pretty much on par with 440C, while impact resistance is second only to CPM1V. Interesting...I'm thinking a big chopper or short sword would be ideal for this steel.
