Cheap backpacks for survival?

My son used to walk five miles home each day due to my work schedule. He carried his books in a Kelty Redwing 50 for three years. Around thirty pounds of weight.
 
I was down on my luck a couple of times and all I could afford a couple of times was one of those Outdoor Products backpacks from the sporting goods section of Wal-mart. The couple that I had held up great. Around $10 is all about 7 yrs. ago.
