Cheap bastard+knife chop=Suggestions?

Why mod a knife at all?

There are lots of small folding knives out there, even with good steel, for cheap.

For example: you can still get a Leatherman 'Expanse' in 154cm for $35 - $40 depending on where you shop... Then there is this little company called 'Spyderco' - look them up, they make TONS of small high quality knives. ;)

Thanks for all the suggestions, guys. To answer mr.trooper, (why mod it at all?) I've reshaped a few tanto blades into a more useful shape for my use, and rather enjoyed it. Used my little HF belt sander, that I got for sharpening, with plenty of water nearby. I kind of like to make them my own, you know. Definetly been looking at the Spydercos, gonna have to check out the Ontario as well, it's been brought up a few times. Hey wroughndt! A local feller! I'm just down the road from you, in Belgrade.

Hi,

I'd like to throw my suggestions out there.

The ontario Rat is a good knife, and it is the folder that I am currently carrying. It came well put together, didn't have any stupid cheap knife problems, and didn't try to hide it's plastic scales (which were slicker than I am used to, but now that I've used it for a few months, not a problem, and appreciated while the knife is in the pocket). Well rounded edges that don't catch your hand as well.

The blade was well ground and sharp enough to go from box to pocket (for me, at least, but I'm not an edge nut). Flicks open with authority, and has a nice big handle (I have big hands, so I feel your pain). It's thin, and pretty slim, so it doesn't hog my pocket as much as my griptillian does. However, it is heavy in comparison.

If I were looking for a folder to go and make my own, this would be my starting point at least, since I paid $25 for it....I could learn how to do a bunch of things like making scales and regrinding blades, and not worry if I make a few mistakes along the way. Up the price point, and that goes away.

Some other suggestions I have considered were the spyderco tenacious line, which are also well received. I have played with them in a store, and found that they were much better put together than you would first believe for $30ish. G10 scales, so don't go grinding them w/o respirator.

Here's what I did:
