Cheap Beater Bowie

I agree, I know there are some good knives here, it just seems most of them come without a sheath thats any better than cardboad and duct tape. Thats why I was hoping I could find something like a $10 cheaper than dirt knife with a $20 sheath.

I do want a kabar or better, but with shipping its looking like $70-80 at the cheapest and i just dont have that.

shouldn't the sheath be secondary to the knife? what are you really interested in; looks or a (cheap) hard working knife that can do all the things you say you want to do with it?

i never knew about cheaperthendirt.com; interesting site...i'm going to get a couple of those $10 bolos, and i don't care if they come with a sheath or not...

Well yes, however to me its next to useless if i dont have a way to carry it. Im not looking for a sit in the truck knife, i want something i can take camping or hiking through the woods and use to beat on. Now I know its big and heavy to haul around, but I dont mind that. Im not backpacking and weight isnt an issue. And if weight was an issue and it bothered me enough, then I would know what to look for in my nice, expensive knife.

What about the Kabar Heavy Bowie, not sure what they run though.

I should have looked harder at first. I thought all KaBars would be higher priced. This is a sweet knife, and im going to guess being made by KaBar its decent quality with a decent sheath. I think this might be a winner...:thumbup:

Check out the Ontarios at Chestnut Ridge Knifeshop, sometimes he has (cosmetic blemish only) factory 2nd's quite cheap. The Marine Raider Bowie is a real workhorse for $50. I have put mine through the ringer and it is still solid as a rock.

Beckerhead

Kershaw Bear Hunter 2 and Antelope fit your price and could probably do most of what you ask. Not sure if I'd baton with em tho.

Becker Necker is closer to $40.

Wrong guess. The CTD Rough Kinife Use is much better than KA-BAR in fit and finish and function.

Watched the knifetest beat down on the CTD Rough Use knife. Drove and hour to CTD in Fort Worth and got one, came home, batoned through a piece of wood and on the third strike the blade separated from the grip. Into the trash it went.

Moral is you get what you pay for. I'd go for a Becker or save for something worthwhile.

You won't be sorry if you get the Kabar Heavy Bowie, tough as hell, pretty cheap, good sheath. A Win Win. I have one of each size of this model.

Yes is is. I have three Spec + Ontario's. They have been well worth the money.

If you are looking for a cheaper than dirt with a better sheath

S&W Search and Rescue Knife, Model CKSUR8, SW-CKSUR8

What is it?

It's a CTD (okay, really made by MTech) rough use knife with a better sheath, for more money. If you can't find a place to buy it from, PM me and I'll tell you a place that sells them that I've done business with who worked out okay for me (your mileage may very).

I have 4 of the mtech version with the cheaper sheath. They slice well, hold an edge well.

I also have four of the mt-151's mentioned earlier. Okay knife, you'll need to sharpen it because it comes out of the box crazy dull. They are okay, but they don't make good choppers in my opinion. Not enough weight, of course, that could be a matter of preference because...

I have a Becker bk-9. That's quite a chopper, and I love it. It's currently my favorite knife to have fun with (until I convince the wife I really need that srapyard five inch INFI blade ;) It costs more. It was worth every penny I spent on it...

Hope this helps.

Wow that sucks, sorry for the recommendation. I guess the quality on those knives very quite a bit.

Nine Tana Leaves for this one.

The MT-151 is now being sold as made of 420 SS.

Some still advertised at made of "440 [A]," but how would one prove the "440" was really "420" ?

Using a so-called "cheap blade" could be quite educational. You might learn that some garden tools perform way better than some so-called knifes. Some steels are rated as cheap, non high-tech, in the knife-lover world. It's true : they are not high-tech. As to performance / ease to sharpen / cutting ability, however, I'm still waiting to see something outperforming 1075 or 1095 steel. In this price range, forget about the sheath : it may be "good use" or "plain shit". Take it as a gift and (probably forget it) move on, it's not the point.

Thread from 2009, buried for over three years. I'm fairly sure he has already moved on.

As for how to tell if a blade is 440A or 420something, chemical analysis is the only way I know of to be certain.

make your own bro!

I did this the other day, was originally a tramontina machete and now it's arough and tough bowie! :)

I did it all with an angle grinder, scrap bits and some epoxy glue for the wood scales! good funa nd the steel is tough! the machetes cost about £10 so you're in for a winner whatever you do to it!

Condor Hudson Bay is as good as it gets for a cheap beater/camp knife. It is an outstanding knife & bargain.
