We stopped into a little place called J&P Liquidators today, looking for Easter baskets. I ended up with 2 10" Nicholson knife files (already beveled
)*, a 14" Simonds red-tang mill 2nd cut, and a big whompin' 16" Tome Feteira from Portugal. This beast is a strong 5/16" thick and 1 7/16" wide. Bwahahahah, I see "Big Mean Chopper" being this thing's destiny
Total cost for the files was $9. I can't have a foot of good steel shipped to me for that, so I figured I couldn't lose. I'll be checking all the old threads for HT info of course. Simonds has the MSDS sheets for thewir files on their site, pretty cool, they list the actual comp of the steel. http://www.simonds.cc/publications/pubmisc.php
I didn't find as much about the Tome Fetiera steel, but the AAT site says they make their own steel in-house. Anyone familiar with these people?

Now I really got no excuse not to build a forge to anneal etc... already picked up a fire extinguisher for the shop
* I almost forgot, the Nicholsons are beveled but have no teeth cut into the faces or edge. Only about halway down the spine, starting near the tang. They're both stamped and hardened, my other files don't want to dig into them at all. What gives?
