cheap, decent quality folder for air travel

IMO your time, money and body cavities would be put to better use skipping the idea of screwing with airport security these days. But if youre really intent on doing it anyway you might as well do it right. Get yourself a Blackie Collins Letter Opener made of a non-metallic composite that wouldn't set off the metal detector. They even make a folding version.

Don't follow this advice. It could get you charged with a felony.

Down here in Florida, there was an older guy whose business travel took him to places like southeast Asia. He carried a knife for protection in those places. Well, post-9/11, he took to carrying a LEXAN SPIKE he had fabricated; I believe they said he hung it on a string around his arm or shoulder or something.

More than just putting you through a metal detector, they apparently sometimes PAT PEOPLE DOWN, so your Delta Dart or CIA Letter Opener, etc. might just get you charged with attempting to bring a dangerous weapon on an air carrier flight. You could do five or ten years for that. And the fact that there is no mistaking such an implement as a "get-past-security" knife, the "authorities" are apt to be much less forgiving if they catch you.

As much as it sucks, just pack whatever knife you want on your trip in a checked bag. Follow the Six Ps: Proper Planning Prevents Piss-Poor Performance. In other words, if you get to the airport and the difference in time between checking a back or not may mean missing your flight, you planned piss-poorly. Leave yourself much more time.

And if you want a good knife for $20 that I so far will swear by, go to Walmart and get the $19.95 Kershaw Vapor. It's an aluminum handled framelock drop-point with a pocket clip. Looks nice, works well, sharpens up okay too. Wouldn't cry if it went bye-bye, but I like having it around.

If you carry a blade on an airline I suspect they will fry your butt. At least I hope so.

PDG = Pretty D@mned Good

in fact so cheap that it might be considered "disposable".......
and boy is it "whoa!" sharp -

I know sound too good to be true - but it is:

The vernerable Opinel - the #8 is the most popular size at 4 3/8" closed - when open it's just about the size of a typical 3 1/4" fixed blade.

The locking collar makes the knife almost foolproof. The blade is thin (so no prying) but has the classic full convex grind which makes it cut like crazy.

Convex grinds are much easier to maintain than most people think - just strop it - away from home cardboard makes a fine strop.

Available in both stainless steel (#23080) and plain carbon steel (#13080).
But be careful there is a series withOUT the locking collar - the numbering system starts with 11-
I think it's the 3 in the numbering that means locking collar.

Other sizes are #7 = 4" closed; #6 = 3 5/8" closed.

How cheap? Low priced at about $6.70 for a #8......
