Looking for a new beater edc on the larger size, but really not willing to exchange a whole lot of cash for said knife. My short list includes the Kershaw Volt SS and the Kershaw Strobe. I really like the size and shape of these two. I also like some of the Schrades. Anyway, I just got a Volt SS at Lowes. Seems like a nice knife, size is right, not ridiculously heavy for plain old steel slabs. Flicks open easily and locks up well. Not too crazy about the jimped thumb ramp and would take that off if I keep it. Scales (sides)are bead blasted steel so there's no real grip to speak of. Would like to get some custom scales if I decide to keep it.

Couple of questions:

a) Volt SS looks to have a very thin liner attached to the inner side of the non-frame lock steel side. I can't figure out what the heck it's for?
b) Where would I get custom scales?
a) Any comments from Kershaw Strobe owners? This is actually the knife I'm more interested in.

I've had a regular volt for awhile, and actually used it quite heavily as a beater knife in my shop. No real issues whatsoever.

About a week ago I picked up a strobe, just to see if ask the reviews were right. They are. IMO the KVT system on the strobe is far and away better than the speed safe system on the volt. The strobe flys open, just as fast as a speed safe , and has none of the annoying closing spring to overcome. I have Hinderers that don't action as well as the strobe, its that impressive. Even more so for the price.

I'd love to see ZT steal it from Kershaw and use decent steel with titanium liners and carbon fiber scales. A guy can dream right?

Yeah, that's the picture I'm getting about the Strobe. Definitely getting one.

BTW, good to see a fellow woodworker around these parts.
