Cheap Everyday Sharpeners

So this weekend i finally had a little man time. :D My EDC knives (spyderco delica and gerber evo jr) had edges that were more dull than most of my butter knives. SOOOO...time to sharpen

It's Christmas time so all my extra funds go for gifts, so I dont have anything fancy like some of you do. I do though, have alot of coffee cups.

Flipped over the cup and there is an exposed ceramic ring. Got them both hair poppin sharp with the coffee cup and also an old leather (seuded back) guitar strap as a strop! Now i have ZERO hair on my left arm and i also managed to give myself a nice little cut when i was shaving.

Also, since the spyderco is an OLD one, I put some jimping on the back of the blade at the thumb ramp w/ a dremel. It isnt super nice, but i like the nonrefined look and this is a functional mod.

Lesson here: More than likely you have everyday things around your house that you can use for a plethora of things that they aren't intended for. I know now that I am not wanting the newest sharpening gizmo like I was for quite some time.

Thanks

I didn't. My dad still uses the strap some soo...nothing on it...i used the seuded side. What could I put on it in the future? Or even an old belt...

My first strop was an old belt. Worked great.
Between some sand paper a belt, I can maintain my knives pretty well. Net investment.... $5 maybe?

One catch, spring for some stropping compound. It really makes a difference.

Cool man...will do...is it (compound) an abrasive?

NVM....google to the rescue

The traditional compound used is the wax-based jeweler's rouge and is well suited for flat or round surfaces like the gouge strop. The Wood-Is-Good compound is a finely ground aluminum oxide which is sprinkled on the surface like salt. Yellowstone strop compound is packaged in a 5 ounce block - enough for many years supply.

What compound would u recommend?

theedge, i just got the bark river compound from knivesshipfree.com. it includes a coarse and a fine (green rouge) compound.

i recommend green rouge, as it is a good mix of coarse cutting and fine polish (it will work great following the ceramic treatment)

the bark river set of compound it a bit expensive, especially if you won't use the coarse compound much. take a look at lee valley, i think they sell single bars and smaller doses...

Thank you Siguy...or i could just send my stuff your way for the "OMG THAT IS FREAKING INSANELY SCARY SHARP!!" treatment :D

I have the bark river set as well. It is a little expensive, but that stuff goes a long way. I've had mine for a long time and still have a ton left on the bar.

When I sit at my desk, I will sometimes use a glossy magazine or catalog as a strop. My SAK is now sharp enough to shave with. Even my "Wally World Special" Ozark Trails rough duty fixed blade is now sharp enough to slice paper held by 2 fingers. (I definitely would not try shaving the the "steel of mystery.")

I don't know why or how it works, but it does.

Great use for all those glossy catalogs that jam the mailbox this time of year. Also, lots of fun to slice them to shreds when you are desk-bound.

Stay sharp,
