Cheap "fighting" folder

If you've changed your mind about liner locks, then I'd say go with the SERE. Only reason it wasn't on my earlier list was because I forgot it had a black blade option.

It sure was. To the point of being discontinued. :( I found the perfect knife (for me) when I found the Wegner. One helluva tactical knife. I highly recommend it. The partially serrated versions can be found for very, very cheap right now. I just wish there were some plain edged ones around for the prise of the partially serrated ones.

I know that you practicaly have your mind made up, but I thought I would throw one more out there. The Bob Lum designed Encounter., It sports a 4" blade of D-2 steel. Several handle options available. This one has Micarta scales:

Hello,

An EDI Genesis one, if you can get hold of one (they're discontinued) is a brilliant knife, if you like ATS 34, for not a lot of cash.

CRKT's KFF. It was designed as a fighting folder and has the Pat Crawford pedigree but at an economy price.

It also has the LAWKS as an extra safety which one forumite (sorry can't remember who as this was back in Y2K), who practiced knife fighting on a wooden dummy, encouraged using the LAWKS for safety reasons...Leather gloves wouldn't hurt either.

Just wanted to let you guys know that because of the advice in this thread, I bought an Al Mar SERE 2000. Ordered a black blade one, received a silver blade. But after discussing with the vendor their mistake I decided to just keep the silver blade so I wouldn't be hesitant about using the knife for fear of scratching the coating.

As for the knife, I absolutely love it. I pull it out once or twice a day to shave some area of my skin just because it amazes me that a knife that large can do that right from the factory. The blade locks up perfectly solid with no side to side play and only a hair of movement downwards as the locking bar slightly repositions itself. Overall knife finish is great and I love the feel of the G10 scales. Even without being broken in yet, it can still be flipped open with relative ease. But that doesn't seem to be a good thing to do to a knife that costs this much so I try to refrain from doing that very often. I'm really glad I went with a knife of this size since its almost exactly the same size as my Gerber Gator, which fits me well. All in all, I would highly recommend this knife to anyone.

Thanks for the advice!!

Mark - you made a great choice! The Sere's definitely one of my favorites. I hope you like it as much as I like mine.
