I am looking for an inexpensive fixed blade for yard work. It will be used to dig out weeds, cut rope and open chlorine bags for my pool. My wife also will use the knife for gardening. I don't want to spend much money because my wife will probably lose it as she did with the last one.

+1. Mora was made for your purposes. Cheap but good quality. Best beater/work fixed blade knives in the world, IMHO. Many people buy several because the shipping cost for one knife is often almost as much as the knife. Sounds like that might be good idea for you if you're worried about your wife losing it.

Buy a $7.00 garden spade from the hardware store and run it on your bench grinder to add an edge. Seriously, I am not being cheeky here.

man, if i've never head of a job that screamed MORA any more.

Ragweed forge is the standard source around here.

+100 on the Mora I don't have one but I hear they are really good work and beater knives.

I couldn't agree more on the Mora, lol. Other than my Mora, I use my Ontario SP8 machete for heavy duty chores. Both knives have been well used.

Mora knives are the perfect solution to your problems. There might even be cheap (er) chinese copies that might do the trick.

If you have relatives in Sweden or know someone going over there, ask them to go in to any hardware store to pick up a bunch. You can get Hultafors knives for about 5 bucks and Mora knives for about the same price. Go for quantity, not quality. One Mora 2000 cost about the same as six or seven regular ones. Usually when you buy something else, like wood for your gazebo etc. they throw in the Moras for free.
And remember, a Mora is expendable. If it gets dull like a stick or breaks, just pick a new one.

True that it's not worth being upset if it breaks.. but do you really replace a mora if it dulls?
They're entirely the easiest grind to sharpen & they take a nice edge..

Yes, but if you can buy a new one for three bucks, why bother :) At least that is what they usually cost in Sweden.

For non-machete yardwork tasks my recommendation is the CS Bushman, especially if you will be using it for digging and things like that.
