cheap fixed blade for yard work

Mora! lol
inexpensive, good EDC, keeps an edge, easy to maintain,
tough and they have many sizes and models, get several
the shipping cost is the same no matter how many you get!

Harbor Freight Tools sells a "Bait Knife" which is a stainless chinese copy of a Mora.
Should be OK for yard work. For $2.99 ya can't beat the price...IF you have a local store, 'cause their website doesn't show it.

Also, Bass Pro Shops has a cheap (~$6) Rapala bait knife:

but call your local store 1st, mine didn't have it in stock.

I'd get a stainless bladed version = no rust. :)

Ka-bar, Glock Field Knife, or SOG Seal Pup Elite would all serve you well. Also Cold Steel GI tanto is cheap and tough as nails.

I have used old bayonettes with good results - and given them to friends for yard/garden work with no complaints.

A tad more expensive, but you'll only every have to buy one. Kabar heavy bowie. This think is great for heavy yard work. Heck dig holes with it...

I've got a GREAT one for you.

The Frost Cutlery Delta Force for $13. It's a cheap copy of Smith & Wesson's Homeland Security Tanto ($39), a truly underrated knife in my humble opinion.

This thing cuts back weeds or digs them out. It's a fine yard tool.

Take a look at the Ontario Work Knives. Most are below $6. I found them on Knifecenter.

I'd get a couple if I were you. Out in the yard, it seems like you sometimes need something smaller for delicate work, and sometimes need something bigger for the tough stuff.

So, I'd get a Mora (or two), and a Cold Steel Bushman for the big jobs. Both are inexpensive, good quality, and very usable.

The price on different knives get the suggestions all wrong.
If you would ask the same question in Scandinavia noone would ever suggest anything else but Mora. Why? Because a Mora here cost about three bucks and a CS Bushman is at least fifteen times more expensive. It has to do with taxes and stuff.

So if you know anyone who is going to Sweden, send them off to Bauhaus, Järnia, Clas Ohlson, Jula, OBS or any other hardware store to buy as many Moras as they think they can carry through customs. They should not cost more than about 20 SEK each.
Hultafors are a bit more expensive, and so are the special steel Moras and the Mora 2000 (which is actually a hunting knife).

I may have found a cheap fixed blade. $13 made of cheap SS in china. It probable will not take an edge but it looks strong and will not rust. good for work around the pool and digging weed out of the lawn.

It is the Winchester Knives: Winchester Hunting Knife,
Wood Handle Large, WN-1339

blade 4.8 inch
lenght 9.7 inch

I bought one of these to use as a backyard beater and it has stood up to the tasks the OP described. Even survived some batoning.

Got it at wal-mart.

If you want to spice up yard work ;)

Buy about a dozen (or a score) MORAs and strap them to your person before doing your yard work. Not only does it make you work on your knife awareness skills, but it gives the neighbors something to gossip about :D !

Do you want to sharpen it when it gets dull? If so, you can afford to invest in quality, and put a pink lanyard on it so the wife doesn't lose it.

If you want disposable, Mora it is, but price matters.. the blades are very thin, VERY sharp, and will break, chip, dull, etc if you try to cut rocks with them. Just not a lot of steel there. Mora is about an ultimate light duty knife, but that might not suit the need.

A Wenger Swiss bayonet, 20$, is exceptionally good steel for a bayonet, buy two if you like that kind of tool.. good value. Cheaper than dirt, other surplus type stores.

I took a 5$ extra heavy duty chinese 'super-trowel', stainless, edged one side and serrated the other, and put a 16 inch handle on it instead of 6 inches.. it'll work. :) Pink lanyard. You deserve good tools........ ;)

Any of the Scandi knives from Ragweed Forge would be excellent.

Also, take a look and do a search for the Hori Hori Garden Knife on duluthtrading.com.
