Cheap, fixed-blade survival knives for a weekend survival course?

Throw in an old hickory butcher knife for the light chopping and batoning.

You could also teach sharpening with this without messing up the grinds on the Mora's.

OH are super cheap too.

You're gonna love that #510, it's my favorite. I believe it is also the one with the longest tang, which goes almost the entire length of the handle.

I have battoned the #510 without problem. I have also rehandled and battoned those.

Here's an x-ray pic of the mora tangs. Not my pic, I stole it from another BF thread.

This is a great thread - it helps one home in on the bare-bones essentials of survival.

I took a wilderness survival course in which we were issued a highly-effective, low-cost survival knife. The knife of choice? Cold Steel Bushman. Of course, this was eight years ago and the Bushman was made of SK-5 steel, which was excellent for its purpose. I don't know which steel CS is now using, but if it's anything decent, I recommend the Bushman.

i instead of ragweedforge, suggest bensbackwoods, you will find all what your looking for and the service is great!

I have...issues with Cold Steel. It's not their products; it's their PR that ruins it for me. The tubby guy in the unbuttoned bowling shirts that runs the show over there might be a really great guy *in person* but in all of CS's promo videos, he comes across as a former-porn-producer-turned-knifemaker who also happens to be the biggest douchebag to ever walk the face of the earth. With all the videos showcasing him (and a few other employees) hacking apart bags of meat, rope, and so forth -- all backed by cheese-fest, 1980s butt-rock guitar tracks -- I simply CAN'T take them seriously, especially with all the over-the-top, "I'm such a badass" poses the actors strike for the camera. Honestly, the first time I saw one of their videos, I genuinely thought it was a parody of a late-night infomercial. Now, having watched quite a few of them, I'd swear that CS has Matt Stone and Trey Parker producing their promos.

The few CS products I've used have been pretty solid, and since I've never met Lynn Thompson, for all I know he could well be the nicest guy you could ever hope to meet, but with the image that company chooses to project for itself (not to mention the personal image Mr. Thompson presents), I have a REAL hard time even considering purchasing something from them, which is a pity.

Careful; the Cult of Ragnar might run you out of town with torches and pitchforks! :D I already ordered a couple blades from Ragnar (nice guy, btw) for evaluation purposes, but thanks for the tip anyway.

Well, to address the cult of the Ragnar...

Ben is a nice guy, and I will do business with him.

But, Ragnar has been online just about as long as there has been an internet. And his prices are very nice.
