Cheap folder as good as RAT?

I like the Spyderco knives myself for a folder. A folder is just not as durable as a well made fixed blade though.

Option one - A razor knife. Appx $5.

Option two reccomendation - Buck Vantage Select. Under $30, made in the United States, and hasn't given me any problems since I got it a few months ago.

It seems the three most popular in this category are the Spyderco Tenacious, Buck Vantage and RAT-1. I personally would spent the extra and get a Delica.

Gerber ezouts are cheap, one handed, and while not the best, hold a good edge for the price. I beat the hell out of mine and never had an issue.

I stopped carrying folders and went to an Izula but before I did I carried a Spyderco Manix for 5 years without a single problem.

The Tenatious (I think it's spelled), looks to be a less expensive, imported version of the Manix.

I've heard alot of good things about the RAT 1, enough so that I'm planning on trying to pick one up to try out.

If your a US only kind of guy, the Buck 110 is still the standard that I judge all other folders on. Around this time of year they can be had for around $20-25 if you keep your eye out for sales. I normally get one every year just for kicks.

The Spyderco Tenacious is good, but you could spend a few extra dollars and get a Delica :D

Thanks guys!
I just ordered 2 Rat-1's from knifeworks a minute ago.
After seeing so many reviews online, as well as recommendations on here, I decided to pull the trigger.
I know there are other nice options out there, but for $70, I bought 2 of the rat-1's, and will beat the snot out of them, knowing I have a spare at the house if one brakes.
To be honest with you, I'm the kninda guy who would rather beat the hell out of a cheap knife, instead of not wanting to use/abuse the high dollar one while at work. With the rat-1, not only is it inexpensive, but good quality as well.
Once again, thanks for your time and info, and once I receive them, mandatory pics will be posted. : )

Chalk up another votefor the Spyderco Tenacious and the smaller Persistence. I also hear good thing about the Byrd Knives if your looking in the low price point.

rat-1's are good, and atm a few suppliers seem to be having sales on em...might get one myself. :D

for what youre doing though a very inexpensive opinel #6 would suffice and last a long time for under $10.

Great call Robert B. I love the Opinel. One of the three best cheap knives on the market---------------Mora fixed blades and the Forschner paring knives being the other two.

I got a Spyderco Crossbill the other day...partial serated for $25 bucks....I think this is the meanest cutting knife I have ever had. For cutting cord, webbing, cardboard, the stuff most people like to cut, it is truely a Light Saber. I am still temped by the Rat 1, but think I will wait til the real Rat 1 is produced.

dude ive been beating on the Buck Vantage here lately, and i really like it. i would definatly go with the upper model the pro i believe because of the upgrade in steel but the thing rocks. and the select is $20 and the Pro with S30V is like $45.

RP #125

Just remember to not expect miracles with any knife when cutting cardboard....it will need to be resharpened fairly often....:)

I have both - RAT-1 and Opinel
I've been very impressed with the RAT-1 for putting up with a lot of abuse while I finished building my house.
OTOH, it's hard to beat an Opinel for sharpness and price.

I have to add the Opinel paring knife to this -- scary little blade!
(love my Mora #2 as well)
The Forschner/Victorinox paring knife is my wife's second favorite kitchen blade, right behind the 6" Wusthof chef's knife.
