I am leaning on a Cold Steel G.I Tanto at $20. Any other ideas? Not looking for greatest knife, just usable knife that if stolen is no big loss!

The GI is a good knife for that. Thick enough that in a pinch you can pry or chop with it if needed, and cheap enough that lost or stolen you wont cry. The Bushman is a pretty good fit as well.

Normally I'd say Mora for a beater, but the GI is a bit thicker in case you have to do any emergency prying.

The Mora is fine if you're looking for a small knife. If you're looking for a large knife, many knife companies make el cheapos, though I think you're on the right track with the Cold Steel G.I. Tanto. The knife I keep in my trunk is the Frost Delta Force. It has high impact plastic grips and a slab of steel you can use to pry open a bank vault. It takes a wicked edge and is easily sharpened. Thirteen bucks from Smoky Mountain. For forty dollars, you can get a S&W Homeland Security Tanto, which has G10 grips and a slab of 440C stainless steel. It's the one the Frost is copied from and comes with a sharpener.

The Cold Steel War Head also is an impressive knife, but has wicked thin edges that take (and keep) a serious sharpening. It's like a small machete/large knife, with the best features of each.

I generally throw a hardware store folder in the truck and just leave it there. I think the current version is a Home Depot Husky folder. It's "new" sharp and has worked like a champ the handful of times I've needed it. I generally have a better knife in my pocket anyway, so it's mainly a backup.

here is the link for the video where noss destroys it.

After seeing this i bought one and i have used mine A HELL OF A LOT and i can post pictures of its near perfect shape if you want.?

i did take the dremel to it and grind the edge to a thinner edge and got a razor edge on it after A LOT of sharpening and FINE detail. there are some flaws tho, since there are no outward dents at the end of the handle the knife can swing out of your hands when your chopping.
It happent to me and the point of the blade went straight for my shin and missed by an inch and cut through my jean. My god was i greatful. one of those moments where you just stop and breath and be thankful :)

Might as well throw in a fiskar's axe in the truck while you are at it. In fact, I've used my axe more than anything tackling downed branches on some logging roads.

CS kudu seems like an ok idea. Cheap reasonably sharp and a strong lock. And something can even afford lol.

Ontario SP8, superb for many a survival, daily application. A real brute!

I have a Spyderco Rescue 79mm clipped to the driver's side sun visor of my truck.

My survival kit knife (i.e. throw it in there and forget about it) is a military surplus Ontario Pilot's Survival Knife. I bought it for $25 some years ago.

My truck knife is actually kind of rare and expensive which is why I didn't mention it first -- a MOD 4 Survival knife -- truly a pry bar with an edge.

One thing I'll say about Smoky Mountain Knife Works is when they reduce prices on a knife, they generally make them low enough to move. Unfortunately, I don't know what they're trying to get rid of at the moment, but I've bought knife and flashlight kits for under ten bucks and they've been great deals. Just peruse their stock and see what they have. I've used my heavy knife to chip ice off my car and to act as traction to get one of my wheels moving out of a rut. Everyone ought to have some cheap tools in the back. Even prying off the lids of the water wells of my car battery is no problem.

Right now I have a Cold Steel Tanto spike sitting in my door pocket just for the halibut, picked it up on Ebay a few years ago for $17...and a CRKT Mt. Ranier...happened to find it in the parking lot of my apartment a while ago. I have them in there since I don't use them in an EDC situation...just in case I need them.
