I took a cheap stainless kitchen knife to a link of chain...

funny thing was i got halfway through by SAWING!

got bored of that and batonned the rest of the way

tweak it sideways while hitting it and you get a bite out of the blade, use the narrow part of the blade for better control

The part of the edge I used for sawing is now dull

the part i actually finished the cut with looks fine but is undoubtedly weakened.

not bad for a couple bucks and super thin cross section

I call this PROCRASTI-CUTTING cuz i should be getting ready for Blade...

Well considering the knife is damaged beyond repair, I dont see many people dropping their jaws......

The did you attempt "chopping" the chain? Batoning and sawing puts far less stress on the edge.

Im not trying to stir the pot, but the fact is you can get through the chain with any knife. Would that same knife be able to function nearly as well as before that chain?

In the case of the ASH in the Busse thread is that the man slammed his knife against that chain until it cut, and even with the chip it could still last for very long time chopping wood and whatever before breaking.

I dont think that there is a knife out there that could withstand such a beating an not walk away unscathed...... If there really is, Im sure there would be a busy knifemaker out there......

This is what always being missed - comparison to other knives. If there is not base line defined and contest includes only one participant - then this is not a contest and single and only participant will be winner by default.

But when someone else enter the race - reality check may surprise.

Thanks, Vassili.

argh, beat me to it. Well, I'll still pick pick up a cheap beater and do the chopping, as people will still day that it's super impressive that a Busse did it, even though a cheap kitchen knife got you to the same end state. Don't worry fellas, another brand will be used to 'chop' chain, because batoning and sawing through steel is something every knife is able to do and isn't impressive. Although, the chain I have isn't .20", I have 1/4" and 3/16". I already chose the quarter inch because I know that chopping through 3/16" (.187") would also not be impressive.

Everyone seems to hate chains all of a sudden. :D

The edge seems to have torn out pretty nicely in the second pic. It will take some serious grinding to get that out.

yeah it tears out when yer as klutzy as i am...

thin stock, 3/32" at spine, full flat grind, didn't like chops at all but careful use of a baton or mallet would be successful

less than 5 minute regrind on a delta 1 by 30

almost any knife can be modified to do this stunt, including hacking, though full power from one guy aint necessarily like full power from another

and i was not trying to say that busses aren't all that tough... they are WAY tough, but hacking an unknown chain with unknown impact velocities proves little

JUST LOTSA FUN!

now i've got this dollar store knife here... back soon with pics

Well, I don't know if you can say that he got to the same end state, as his knife sustained far more damage. Good for him for rising to the challenge, this could get fun if more folks try it.
