I found this knife on amazon. I don't even know the brand, probably because it's not even a name worth mentioning. However, it is one hunk of steel with a rope handle (probably would replace that with 550 paracord) and 440 stainless. It is being sold for as low as under 3 dollars! I figure at that price why not. I would only get it so I could abuse it as much as possible until it bends, breaks, snaps, chips, or whatever happens to it. I thought I would ask what you guys thought, again I know its a piece of crap, but at the price of less than a piece of crap I figured it was a good deal. Oh, AND IT COMES WITH A FIRE STARTER!

Here a description and a picture:
This is the Mini Full Tang Survival Knife Magnesium Fire Starter. The Blade of the knife has been constructed from 440 Stainless Steel with a tanto point. The sheath is tough green nylon with a belt loop. The knife includes a magnesium rod fire starter.

what is the point? just another piece of junk that you will never use in favor of your more expensive blades. you would essentially be paying to store it. even if you did use it, I would always bring another blade just in case this one broke, and so it is extra weight. this is all IMHO.

Certainly a good value for 3 dollars.
I have already better knives so have no use for any cheap knives at all.
Which is a good thing. There are so many of them that buying them or discussing would be a simple waste of space-time continuum...
It is like picking pebble at the ocean shore: looks nice right now and there, and when you bring it home - just another junk in your room you better get rid of... :D

Depending on what you want the knife for, it might be okay.

The blade's not going to bend or break if you use it for defense, though it won't be much of a cutter. Since it's designed as a self defense tool the only downside is the sheath, which may be awful. The steel may also not be up to cutting through clothing or rope.

Neck knives are pretty cheap and you can get one far better than this. Cold Steel's got some very nice knives that might fit the bill. And S&W has some good neck knives for about ten to fifteen bucks. Don't feel like you need top tier quality steel (S30V) for a neck knife unless you're going to cut extensively with it. Most defensive knives just don't need to be anything better than 440A (good 440A) or AUS8. You want it to have a great edge, but it's not necessary that it have excellent edge holding capabilities.

Whatever you're willing to spend, you'll find someone to sell you such a knife.

honestly it just looks like a cheap sharpened prybar, and id much prefer a quality prybar over this but if it floats your boat have at it

At that price what the heck, it's always good to have extra blades around, and the fire starter may come in handy.

I'd rather buy 3 butter knives at the dollar store, they'd probably see more use, and less likely to break and injure me.

Oh enough of the snobbery, what on earth are you possible going to do to a knife, of this size, that would break it ??? Worst case scenario: It dulls fast.

Thank you Hawkings, I know everyone thinks its terriable I'm thinking about this cheap knife, but it's one solid hunk of steel so it might bend (probably not snap in half) also I'm only getting it because its cheap and I don't have a knife that size (yet) so until I get a good one this one will due.

3 bucks? You can't go wrong. It's a piece of metal, and if you end up not liking it you can mod the hell out of it. Not to mention, it comes with a firestarter. Most people will charge you more than 3 bucks for the firestarter itself. I'd say go for it.

Will that knife even throw sparks with that starter? Is it magnesium? I thought those magnesium fire kits were to be scraped and then have a ferro rod and a piece of carbon to make sparks. Maybe I'm confused.
Good luck with the knife, you'll likely pay more for shipping.

I've used a $4 un-named knife i got at a gun show for many years now...not one problem with it. It's been beaten used as a pry bar and such and it still goes. Nothing wrong with a cheaper knife. If you like it use it. Its your knife, go with what you like, and don't let anyone tell you different.

The last $5 dollar fixed blade I batoned with (wood 1" diameter baton into soft wood) took about 4 hits (about 50% strength) before it broke into 3 peices, a knife I had bought in junior high at a gunshow, you get what you pay for.

I see it this way: If you have good knives (fallkniven, Bark river, ESEE, Busse, etc) thats like having a lamborgini or Bentley or whatever, so why buy a ford Pinto w/ huge spoiler and racing stripes spray painted on just because you can get it for a good price?

You might be surprised. I bought a cheap knife like that (not the same but similar) about 3 years at a fair for a kid (he asked for it). Kid lost it pretty fast, I found it after couple of months. Sometime later I used it once as a pry-bar. It actually broke so easily, I couldn't believe it. After half inch from the tip went missing, I got curious and tried the rest of the knife. That thing was snapping like cast iron and I ended up with four or five pieces.
Try some lateral force. If it holds, then maybe you can get some use out of it.

i personally wouldn't buy it, but for $3, what the hell, just don't rely on it for anything important. a cheap knife like that is something you keep in your trunk/tool box and give it some abuse every once in a while.

p.s. make sure to check that the fire steel works, if it does, that's a big plus.

its the same price as a gallon of gas. who cares?? buy it and beat the hell out of it:) just keep us posted.
