Cheap knives: Any thoughts?

Not sure about the sash. Do you mean the original style trappers/trade era sheaths? If so that sounds like it has some merit to it and the sheath may well work better that way than with a modern belt. The belt seems to put too much tension on the sheath mouth, making the knife harder to get out and closing the mouth of the sheath up when the knife is removed.

The Bushie sheaths do have a hard plastic or kydex insert inside them.

Yeah, speaking about the original sheath. The information was given to me several years ago by a longhunter/mtn. man at a rendezvous and it made sense.

The Full sized Bushamn now comes with a plastic lined Cordura sheath (R), the Mini's is still leather (L):

Ugh, I forgot about those new cordura sheaths. Mine was still the leather one. While I didn't care for the way it worked with that belt loop I still think it looked better than the Codura anyway. :barf:

Mine has one of the Cordrua sheaths – ‘bout as cheesy and fugly as can be, but usable. If I intended to carry the Bushman for extended periods on my belt, I would invest in a better sheath.

I didn't like the seath on either of my bushman, standard and mini. I've since replaced them both. The mini fit into a black cordura sheath I found at a flea market. I recently made a leather sheath for my large bushman. The standard sheath it came with didn't allow me to cord wrap the handle. My leather sheath allows for this. Mac

I like Mora Frost knives a lot, and they are under $20. Razor Edge sells pocket knives that are under $20.

Cheap does not always meen pore equipment, to me Vic Saks are cheap but they are good, Frosts Mora are cheap but they are good1 I wish I new this many years ago and would have saved so much money on knives.

i don't like my bushman, the handle doesn't feel good nt a good grip, the sheath sucks, think i'll try selling it, prefer my mora

As far as inexpensive knifes go, I like the Bushman. I also like the Cold Steel Trail Guide, which Cold Steel has in closeout. A carbon steel lockback folder for less than $30.00. NICE

I agree with some of the previous posts that the Bushman's sheath is not the best you could get. I've looking at a kydex sheath for the bushman made by Sheath Mechanic for $26.95. I know that the sheath would be more expensive than the knife it would carry, but if you are really getting the most out of your Bushman, the investement may be worth it.

The Cold Steel SRK is a great all around knife. I've been wondering lately about their True Flight throwing knife. It is made of the same steel and has the same thickness and length and about the same weigth than the SRK. wonder if it would a good outdoors beater knife. I Think I need to start a thread on this.

I have 2 Schrade ch7's. One new in the packaging since they went out of buisness, and another which I take swimming in lakes, tucked safely away in my swim shorts pocket. I have never had a use for a knife in the water, but I have heard of divers getting cought in plants so I carry it. I don't use it for a lot of cutting because it won't hold an edge too well, but I never have to oil it, even after being emersed in water for 2 hours, so it does have its place.
