I need to redo the collection again...I am gonna have another KID:thumbup:
Apparently..I need to learn to enjoy the more affordable tools in life. ;)
I have been moving in this direction lately anyways..my 12" tram so impressed me over my Bark River Golok..I felt slighted. I think that I have enough knowledge to make good purchases based on usefulness over looks or (coolness) cost. I guess I am finally OLD. Toys dont matter like your kids man...well. Here we go again..I was almost done with the diapers..right back to em. :barf:
Just kidding. I think this ones a boy..it doesnt matter, but I have 3 girls already counting my stepdaughter (ofcourse I count her, shes awesome) SO..send up smoke for a boy!!! somebody has to go out and hunt frogs and play with matches, shoot BB guns...stuff like that.
Anyway..just incase you guys wondered why I have been selling and buying like a madman lately..I am trying to work it all out...before the due date..after that...I am not gonna be buying any knives for a couple years. So I want the kit to work for me. I'm gonna be stuck with it for a while.

Congrats! I just had a boy and am pretty stoked myself. Best of luck during the pregnancy and beyond.

I feel your pain about now appreciating the more reasonably priced tools in life, although having a healthy kid is a good trade off IMO.

Take care.

I've been moving towards less expensive (and cheap) and away from expensive (overpriced) and over-hyped gear lately as well. Children are a very good reason too. I don't have a baby on the way, but I can afford to do more with my kids now and with gear they can enjoy as well. You can say it's about getting older, but I personally consider it being less selfish and more about family values for me and mine.
Anyhow, Congrats on a new family member comin' along, and a wise decision.

Ofcourse its about family before me...I am being a bit of a joker here..I am very happy to sell anything I need to. Or if I never buy a knife again..who cares..I have all I need..I had all I needed after the first or second knife I bought 2 decades ago. I am a collector..now I am just collecting kids instead of knives.:D Thanks for the Congrats.

That's funny! I've been saying that for awhile. (I have six kids)
Kids can be almost as useful as a knife too.:D

Gene Congrats and smoke sent for your boy bro.

And by any chance you have another girl, just keep trying; soon you'll have your own chearleading squad. ;)

I have two boys and a girl. My daughter wanted to go to the deer camp with me. The wife said she would be appalled around the dead deer and I did not have a place for her to stay. She never went and now she's grown. What a mistake. Should have found a way to take her. Don't let that happen to you.

Congrats on the upcoming baby! I have 2 stepdaughters (30 and 25) and 1 daughter (soon to be 25). My daughter has been my shooting and fishing partner since she was about 10, I couldn`t ask for more. The shooting part has paid off, she is a LEO, graduated 4th in her class. Enjoy them while they are young, they grow up way too fast!

Everything goes in cycles, and then you may drift into a 'selling mode' where your once beloved collection has seemingly lost any luster that moved your soul initially. Coming to the realization that your 12 inch Tram cuts (with a proper edge) about as good as anything out there will save you a lot of hassle and cash in the long run albeit not as sexy a choice for the coffee table. I learned that my reprofiled 18 inch Ontario was a better and more efficient chopper than any of my Busse knives, even my beloved Basic 9although I resisted the admission thereof for quite some time. Sure, I love the addiction of the hobby, but my Mistress stays in the darkness of the drawer whilst the 119 gets to slice onions and peppers in the kitchen.

I went through a phase where I had to buy custom knives. Curiously, I am less drawn to the higher priced blades but I do enjoy looking into new steels and advances in the science of making alloys etc. But how long can you stare at charts and composition numbers? For me, it boils down to phases. One year you may be drawn to Titanium, or get a kick out out of using your Talonite blade on a hunting venture...or perhaps you fork out way too much green for an INFI offering. I find myself grabbing the 110 when I exit the door and have not needed much else for quite a period of time.

It may be a financial or common sense thing: but when I last tested an MTech 440 fixed blade, the piece of steel performed flawlessly. The little blade took a great edge and held up well during a box-cutting session, then it went on to a Boy Scout camp for a week in the kitchen. Following that, the knife has been used for numerous chores and finally made its way to Iraq. A similar blade was used by the masked-abuser and actually made it through the tests without the blade breaking (the tang did give in though to the side impacts of the hammer) or shattering into pieces. All this from a 10$ knife? One has to question if pound for pound these 'cheap' 440 knives are not indeed the best bang for the buck for the average user.

At the end of the day, you may love Cold Steel, SOG, Schrade, or anything in 154cm, Zeron 25, Farralium, 5160, Greek Ascoloy or a host of others out there in the mix. Keep the 12 inch Tram, snag a SAK and a good axe and sock the rest of your cash away for your children. In the long run, they will be a better investment.

Gene, COngrats bro...I unoficially have 1 on the way too..(it's unofficial till after the first trimester) I hear you on the cheap knives... mora tram and a sak..and you're good to go.. Congrats again..

congrats gene.. smoke sent for that boy man...:o my wife and i already have to of them... i told her we weren't having any other kids, if there wasn't any gaurantee for a girl...:)
