what types of hardwoods from home depot could be used for scales. also do they have any sealers that would work. the search function sucks.

I've bought the red oak strip, about 1/4" thick and it worked great. I used a bit of a walnet stain to darken it. Might want to stabilize it. The ones I made did shrink just a tad bit. Any sort of oak or walnut boards should work great.

Forgot to respond to the sealers. I've tried the water thin crazy glue, as recommended by North Coast Knives and it works well. Just sand/buff it as normal and it will make a very hard finish. Another thing I'm going to try this weekend is stabilizing with Minwax Wood Hardener, which they also sell. I have applied it just as a finish and it works well like that. North Coast Knives also as a tutorial on stabilizing using the wood hardener.

One other thing, Ace hardward used to carry a bunch of nicer woods in sizes appropriate for handle scales. Haven't looked in a couple of years.
