Anybody know of a cheap (real cheap) source for A2? Flatground.com has very good prices when (if) they have it on "special". But, who knows when that's ever going to happen again.
- Thanks

how cheap is cheap to you sir?

yeh when those specials were going for months and months, they did have some killer prices! I think flatground is one of the cheapest around as it is.

How do you heat treat your A2 Troop?

Pohan

Hi Mr. Leu,
Yeah...flatground.com still has the best prices around. By "cheap", I mean the flatground.com "special" price. I was just hoping they'd have the A2 on special again soon. I should've gotten a whole bunch while it was still available on special!
I've been doing an oil quench, then an hour at 400 in my "K-mart special" toaster oven, then for another hour at 425. So far, it's been coming out better than fantastic! But, I have a "secret technique" that I use prior to the soak that Smiths would understand! Not that you wouldn't understand, but I'm trying to hint around it without giving it away. I thought of a way to "fool" the A2! I can't tell you anymore than that. It holds an edge like you wouldn't believe, and tough like anything! Thanks for the reply, Mr. Leu.

P.S. Sam, if you are reading this, please don't give away my "secret technique"!
Thanks. :D

As far as field testing my A2, the friend that I made a recurve hunter for has, of yet, taken the backstraps out of two deer so far, which means cutting through the hair and hide of the deer, (and, the way he takes out the meat, jabs the edge against and into the backbone of the deer), and the blade has no deformations of any kind, and it still shaves hair.

wow...sounds like you've really got something there! keep making blades Troop! :D

Pohan

Man Troop, for some reason everytime I see your avatar, i think Brad Pitt with a hat on !

FWIW, I have called Diehl recently and got a pleasant fellow who took all my information and of course never called me back, twice :thumbdn: Maybe your luck will be better.

CHEAP.. Good luck. Taint nothing cheap in the metals world anymore. Gold was $835 an ounce yesterday, scrap copper was $4 and lead was $1.15. Just priced sinkers to go fishing tomorrow, lead is over $5/pound. If you can find any blade steel for under $3/pound buy all you can. It is only going up from here.

Yup plain old mild steel plate is up to over 80 cents a pound and it isn't slowing down much. Every one talks about stock market. If I would have just bought regular steel plate at 23 cents a lb I would be rich now.

Heck mild steel from norcal was over $1/pound six months ago. Just try to order anything special....
