Cheap stainless swimming in the Gulf Of Mexico

the ad15....aus10 one or s35vn?

I've always swam with a knife too. I've got h1 salts and just use those, but any of the salts work.
S35vn, unfortunately. Liners rusted too. It's not meant for corrosion prone environments so it's not the fault of the knife. I've since swam with the caribbean several times and it's rust free. It's my favorite salt line series knife. I handled a bunch of salts at smkw.

I believe that the SOG Aus6 has coating to protect it from rust and not bare steel.

AUS steel series is basically type 420 with higher carbon content. Still very stainless, but I don't think it is as good as 16%+ Cr steels.

Most high rust resistance steels don't hold an edge for long, unless they are PM steel with impossible composition for cheap ingot alloys, which is not great advertising points for knives. Say, AUS6 was phrased out because it can't cut as many cardboard and rope as many other steels back in the 2000s despite being extremely close to the composition of AEB-L and the current very popular 14C28N.
Correct, the Seal 2000 was powder coated, and all knives submitted to the test had coated blades. But obviously the edges on all of them were not.

There are other steels that are or may be better at corrosion resistance today, But back then the 440A/Aus6 steel was widely used due to availability and cost.
True, edge holding is not good with such steels as evidenced by today's H1. I am not advocating these older steels as being the best at corrosion resistance, simply that it should not be surprising that the OP's 7Cr17MoV knife held up well.

I'm a always have a knife/swim with a knife guy too
I got some disparaging comments from the girlfriend and her grown daughter about it. Also about the handgun I took along and carried for our protection. Concerning the knife clipped to my pocket at the beach, my reply was that it was in case someone got tangled in fishing net/fishing line/whatever and was drowning in it and simply because I’m never without a knife. You just never know

I'm done giving excuses, I carry a knife because I want to lol good on you for carrying.

You sound like me, gun as nearby as can be safely kept and knife in pocket. I’ll be in PCB next week, how was the water? I saw they had some nasty riptides a few weeks ago.
I’ll be carrying a cold steel In either AUS10 or S35V, I’m curious about the rust situation as well. I usually pick up a salt for beach trips but my last experience had a little too much bladeplay for me.

The water was great! Nice and warm. Single red flag for the first two days and yellow thereafter until the last day it was back to single red flag. Most days it was clear and you could see the bottom until you got about 60 foot out from the beach. I swam at least 100 yards out from shore every day even the first day we were there in a thunderstorm. That was a workout for bad rotator cuffs let me assure you!
After my little experiment I’d carry any knife I wasn’t real scared of losing and just flush it out with clean water real good when I was done in the ocean. I hope you have as good of a trip as we did!

99% of the time a junker will suffice for the job and I do carry one sometimes however I get a lot more joy from carrying something better. I will say that with a junker I have zero issues with using a pull through sharpener or electric kitchen knife sharpener or whatever because I just want it sharp fast and if it looks like crap, oh well. I don't blame you a bit, if I had lost a Salt I'd be moderately disappointed for a while and probably make an effort to backtrack at least a bit and try to find it, I'd definitely keep an eye out, if I lost a S&W, Colt or any other of my multitude of cheapos I wouldn't do more than take a casual glance at the ground around me and go on with my day.

who knows what steel(s) S&W may have switched from.

None, S&W doesn't make knives and may not even know who the OEM is for these licensed brand-adjacent products, if they knew what kind of steel was used in any of those knives I would be surprised. If they had a hand in choosing it I would buy ten lottery tickets.

The only care it received after salt exposure was that I rinsed it off in the sink and shook it dry before leaving it wet on the bathroom sink

This probably helped a lot.

Never had any problems with stainess steel and fresh water as long as the knife is dried over night.

This has been in my pocket everyday since it'a arrival.

I prefer the blade shape over the Enduras, and the pocket clip is not painted like the E4. No liners to rust, and no corrosion on the fasteners or blade.

I love it so far

Love that knife too.

A little warning though. And I think it is salt water relatet.

The screw that locks/pivot the lock bar has stuck on mine. The whole thing just spins. I know the threaded tube is suppose to be stuck in one possition, but somehow mine lost the grip.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll keep an eye out for that if I ever decide to disassemble.
