I read Tetsusaiga's thread about titanium framelocks.

unfortunately, I'm just a poor student and can't put together $150.

Are there any cheaper titanium framelocks out there?? say in the region of $50-$60 with a 4 in blade.

At that price, I'm not particular about blade steel.

Any recommendations from the knowledgeable folks here

In that price range (actually around $80), something like the CRKT M16-Titanium is all that comes to mind, though it is a liner lock rather than a frame lock. You may need to change either the material or the lock type that you're looking for in order to find a knife that fits. There are lots of great knives that fit within your budget, but when you limit the size, scale materials and lock that way you have, it's a bit tougher.

You can still find the discontinued series of "S-" folders made by Columbia River Knife and Tool. There were/ are 2 size framelocks with Ti handles with less than 4" blades. They come up on the F/ S or F/ T forums once in a while- for less than $60.

I do not know of a Ti framelock for $60, but the Benchmade monochrome is a solid SS framelock that is made in Taiwan, but it is a 3 inch. They go for around $30 or so...

and they are making a new, small, budget framelock for HK that is new this year.

If you can scrape together more dough for real Ti framelock, then get a BM mini-skirmish

I have to say that the Kershaw Storm would be the better alternative to the Benchmade Monochrome. For the $30 the Kershaw is made in the USA as opposed to the Taiwan made Monochrome. Plus, I like Kershaw better.

On that note, I miss the days when the CRKT S-2 was in production and a person could obtain a Ti Framelock for under 100 dollars. I personally own two of the S-2s and love them. I know that Ti is an expensive material to obtain and work with, but it would be nice to still see something like the S-2 on the market.

The CRKT S-2 can still be found on the net for about 60 bucks - an outstanding buy for an ATS-34 blade and titanium frame. The CRKT Wasp also has a Ti frame and good steel. (AUS-118 is similar to ATS-34) The styling is a little different and it's not particularly comfortable for prolonged use but the fit and finish on the Wasp is very nice for the price.

I think you might be better off looking for a SS Frame Lock if you are on a budget.
Kershaw has the best Frame Locks at a decent price IMHO.
Also. Most people I know (even the poor college students) spend a ridiculous amount of money on coffee, fast food, and other little luxuries. I bet you could save up that $150 in a month or two with some ingenuity and self-control.

hey, when i was a poor college student (only last year) i managed to eat enough Ramen to scrimp enough together for a Strider !

I second the BM Monochrome.. totally excellent folder.... leaves many made in USA products in its wake... but then.. its only a SS frame not a Ti frame..

I didn't know Kershaw used framelocks.. i thought they were all linerlock or studlock??

Kygro,
Another poor student thread ..... ok....as a stdent, STUDY ...forget the knife ... but if you still have this knife fetish .....
1)ask your dad for the money
2)talk your girlfriend into giving you the money
3)forget the knife
4)get a better paying student type job
5)sell some other junk you have

I have the CRKT Wasp...great knife. Light and sharp...the AUS-118 steel is really nice. Ergos aren't the greatest, but you get somewhat used to it. The G10 is really nice too.

Aside from the Wasp and the S-2, I can't think of a Ti folder <$100. SS is much heavier, but there are many nice SS frame lock folders within and well under your range.

OK, looks like I will have to lower my expectation.

In that price range ($50-$60), what about a STAINLESS STEEL framelock (instead of titanuim) with a 3.5 to 4 in blade?

Quality of the lock is of the utmost importance. Blade steel is not important.

I also have a BM Monochrome so I can relate to all the good things you are saying about it. Its a steal at that price.

Any other SS framelocks that are built like tanks and with a 3.5-4 in blade?

If you are really set on titanium, I'd just go right to the for sale forum here and take a look around for a CRKT S-2. I've seen a bunch of them going for around $50 and there still may be one or two left.

I hate to sound like a broken record, but try to find an S-2. As everyone here has already said, it is an awesome knife for the money. I picked one up on the forums and was sorry that I waited so long. There appears to be one available right now as I am typing this. For the record, I bought a Wasp at Big 5 the other day because they had them on sale for $24 or so... I love the thing. It isn't one that I had wanted before, I just got it because it was on sale (impulse buying), but I would recommend it wholeheartedly.

I got the risten. would understoodedered even if ya type in Chinese. :D

Mi bad, never tell everyone that i hab a CRKT S-2 aw-red-dee. :D

Never mind, me change now.

Titanium soft, no good. Stainless steel hard, good.

Recommend me SS framelocks that lok like tanks, with 3.5-4 in blade.

Framelock ok, not liner lok puhlisse

Kershaw Storm (actually the Storm II with your size requirement)
Kershaw Groove
Kershaw Vapor II
CRKT My Tighe
