Cheaper Steels the new Trend?

I have no problem with the choice of AUS4 or 420HC on inexpensive knives. A company has to keep its costs down when manufacturing these entry level products.

If ya think knife makers have been only using quality, expensive steel since the dawn of time until 'recently', you're mistaken. Most all have always used whatever sells and gives them the best profit margin - always.

I agree with WYK, the trend isn't towards "cheaper" low quality steels, in fact if you look it's quite the contrary. Within the last 10 years there's been a very rapid rise in the adoption of premium steels that weren't even considered before due to cost/machining difficulity/complex heat-treat. Look now and you see production companies left and right using S90V, VG-10, S30V, and a variety of other high performance stainlesses.
