Cheaper than dry ice?

There is no liquid air plants near me and the nearest location I can get Liquid N2 is 125 miles away. I also know that the way the Dewar keeps liquid cool is by constant loss through evaporation. Yes, I can drive 250 miles round trip and get it. Cost goes up a bit when you add the gas. I also like to built stuff and experiment. I could have been satisfied with a couple of aluminum plates for quenching too. But, I made a matched set with internal passageways that I pump ice water through and are aligned by a long dowel set. I could have send money and had a HT oven delivered. Instead I built a large digitally controlled oven with 1.5 times as much power. Ya, I love making knives, but, thats not all.

I am currently collecting the pieces to built a large stainless steel reflux column still to produce near pure alcohol

I can never understand people who don't like to explore and experiment.

Yep, Lewiston to Billings is about 140 miles. That makes it a bit of a trek.

Just for fun, check some of the big groceries to see if they carry Dry Ice, and farm suppliers to see if they have LN.

Stacy dry ice is not a problem. I can get it at the 1 grocery store. I never thought about asking the fertilizer place about liquid N2.

wbeatty, I plan to set it up so I can either go with the reflux for ETOH or take the column off, hook on a simple condenser and make decent sipping fluid. Working in the industrial piping business I can get free or cheap stainless stuff cheaper than copper and I would rather weld than solder. I don't drink much myself, but it is interesting. Being on the edge of the oil field someday I may want to set up a small gas and diesel still.

Nope, you can get a free permit to make fuel and also get one for making whiskey for personal use.

and if I didn't get a permit I would only be carrying on a fine old tradition of this part of the country and many others.
