Cheapest Decent Multi-tool

I just realized I am lacking a multi-tool in both my camera bag and my bike bag. Anybody have any recommendations for something pretty inexpensive?

I have a pair of winchester multitools that are great. My wife bought them for me when I met her for $10 at Wal-Mart and Gander Mountain has them too. They are tough as hell. The knife blade is just old 440 that is so so on edge holding but I use the pliers and the screwdriver bits mainly on it. It comes with 10 bits torx etc that all clip onto it allowing you to remove about any fastener. I prefer it over my leatherman I got a while back.

blaspemy :)

are you talking Leatherman type tools, or would a Swiss Army Knife work?

how cheap is cheap? what tools are you looking for?

Well I think I'd need at least some pliers so, no not Swiss army type.

Leatherman type but without the bling!

i've heard of people finding the Original Wave (Leatherman) used pretty cheap, like under $40

the Leatherman Kick is a little stripped down, but looks pretty good for $30, i think Wal-Mart and Bass Pro carry it

Spyderco has a new tool kit that's going retail for about thirty bucks. It looks very nice and have been hoping someone would post a review and a place to get it from cheap.

My choice would be a factory second from SOG. Those are my favorite multi-tools, and a way to buy them on the cheap. They used to be (I haven't checked in a while) available from the SOG website.

I swear it will be the best bang for the buck multtool you will ever get. I have many a lowend multitools I bought trying for a decent cheap one for truck, tackleboxes etc and this is the best I have found.

that better? On that site it says they are made by Gerber? I dont know if its true or not but anyway I like it.

Doug Ritter did a review of it for his Shot show report, I believe on the equipped to survive website. IIRC he wasn't terribly impressed with it. There's no way to lock any of the tools open, and seemed more like a gimmick than anything else.

While I've been known to "scrimp" on a knife , I do not do the same on MT's.
Cheap MT's are exactly that , cheap MT's.
I have an older Gerber , a new Leatherman Kick and I had a Shrade Mt until recently (lost it).
The old Gerber was a constant companion for years and worked good but the newer ones are so much more advanced , the Kick is awesome but I wish it had a file. The Schrade was damn tough but some of the tools were difficult to open , however out of the bunch the Schrade was the best IMO.
I wouldnt buy anything Husky , Husky used to be a great brand , now thier tools are crap , I've bought my last Husky , last year.
The Winchester ones... meh. No experience with that brand but the knives look pretty shoddy , all of this is my opinion of course.
Invest the few extra dollars into something solid and well crafted , you wont be disappointed.
I wouldnt worry about not having exotic , space age steel on the knife blade too much as well.

Compact and tough - cheap too. I saw it the other day for around $15.00 at Super Target.

Never saw Squirts at Target for less than $25. In what part of the world did you find it? Could you have mistaken it with a Micra? It is same sized but often sells there for $15.

The Leatherman Squirts at our local Target stores are not currently on sale.

But, I bought Squirt S4s, Juice CS4s, and Victorinox One Hand Trekkers for 75% off during clearance sales at various Target stores earlier in 2006. I think the S4 sale price was under $8 back then. I live in Illinois, USA.

Target does ocasionaly sell Squirts for $14 0r $15. Got my wife one for $14 a few years back. Still kicking myself for not getting two at that price.

Edited to add: Almost forgot, I'll second the Winchester. I have one that lives in the toolbag in my car. I normaly have a multitool on me (KF4 or Charge) and an original Supertool lives in my shoulder bag. The Winchester is a Just-In-Case sort of thing. It also gets used for things that might bugger up my Leatherman tools. If the Winchester gets messed up, it wont hurt to replace it. Its not a greatr tool, but is tough and the tools are acceptable. Not great, but will do in a pinch. The knife blade on mine sucks, but I also keep an old Utica Scout knife in the car, so that's ok.
