Cheapest of the Cheap

Hey Jill Jaskson, I have one of those bait knives in my tackle box, I have never had a problem getting a shaving sharp edge on it, I even sharped the top serration-esque things so I could saw through a fish body if I needed to. It doesn't hold the edge for a very long time, but it gets really sharp.

I also bought one of those 1$ folders and cut it down into a key ring tool a few years ago, the notch for the lock bar works as a bottle opener after a little modification. Its a cheap homemade keychain pry tool now.

These have been around for a while, there was actually a recall on them at one point.

Before the recall I bought a half dozen or so to throw in tackle boxes or in various places in the shop, I think it was about 4 of the 6 didn't even lock open.

Post recall I heard they're slightly better, or at least lock:D

They're cheap enough, who cares.

That video was hilarious. I love that he cuts into it with a Sage, and then it's just broken right from the get go. The comments are pretty funny also.

Hehe, I knew a guy in Oklahoma that carries that knife every day, has a ton of high end customs, crazy old guy.

This thread has really sparked my interest the next time I'm at wally world I may pick one of these up at the most I'm only gonna be out a dollar or so. I just don't see a 1 dollar knife being remotely servicable but I may be wrong.

I modded mine. With a little tune up, these things are as good as, if not better than, a Spyderco or Benchmade.

You should all keep an open mind when you are re-attaching the blade to the scales having taken it out of its packaging.

Did you mod yours with custom liners, custom scales, and a custom blade? Lol

My friend got me 30 of those for my birthday, he took them all out of the packages and put em in a bag with a container of bleach and a pack of nitrile gloves.... hes a bit special. We destroyed all of them, throwing them around, abusing, and what not. Got a few hours of quality entertainment.

Keep in mind that Walmart makes at least 50 cents on the sale of a $1 item. That sounds like a lot, but it's really not when you think about the labor costs and the facilities costs and overhead. They are barely living on 50 cents. So Walmart doubtlessly paid no more than 50 cents for the knife on their dock. The knife is certainly not made in the US, so there are transportation costs. The knife manufacturer will need at least 50% too to cover his overhead. There are packaging costs too. The bottom line is that the material cost of the knife is no more that ten cents. It is really hard to believe that a knife can be made from less than ten cents worth of materials.

I've sharpened a few for people I know. Probably the sorriest knife-like object in current use. Those big Frost folders with the non-functional liner locks deserve honorable mention, though.
Anyone else ever get the $10 Coleman machete from a few years ago? That thing amazed me. The soft, hollow plastic handle scales, the way the blade retained indentions from everything it hit...I was in awe.

even tho wally world sell these things, they also offer some decent blades at a fair price. I really like my buck paklite hunter, paid just under $20 for it, and they also have sog tridents for like 50 bucks. Not a fan of wally world, but gotta admit their low prices are good (sometimes) and a good source of cheap ammo.

More like 60-65, although they CAN be found for around 50 bucks. Just not at Walmart. I have never seen a decent quality knife at Walmart that I couldn't find for cheaper elsewhere. Saves me from having to do business with them.

I found one of those on the side of the road once. The one I found was slightly more impressive than the one in that video (only slightly though).

If you want to contemplate economics that really do not add up, head down a few isles and have a look at the LED flashlights. A co-worker bought one for a dollar and it came with 3 AAA batteries. It has worked for him for the past few months on the batteries it came with...how can an item be made/assembled/transported from that far away and generate a profit at a price of a single dollar?

Looks just like the average rest stop, dollar store knives, just straight up junk. Worth it I guess, but most of us knife nuts have tons of decent knives that we don't use much, why not use those as beaters.

watch cajunblazes video of this knife on youtube. very funny. it falls apart in his hands when he opens package. bad knife.

crimsom, I did a double take when I saw it, but yep there it was behind the glass door at wallyworld, a black trident for 50$. I woulda gone for it if I didn't have a tiger stripe already, but to be honest, the trident doesn't impress me that much anyway. The seat belt cutter gap snags on draw way to often, and the blade play, even if it's not severe, is a known issue.
