It's gonna be a bit of a wait. I've got dirt in my slow-speed escapement. I've been noticing a problem with over-exposure lately. When I heard that Camera World was going to have a Pentax technician to test Pentax cameras for free on Saturday, I took it up and had it checked. The light meter is dead on, but the shutter speed is all over the place. From the sound, he diagnosed the slow-speed escapement. He also felt that my light seals were looking rather worn. But, the first thing he said when I pulled that old camera out was, "A Spotmatic! Lucky you!"
So, the faithful Spotmatic went into Advanced Camera Repair yesterday. They're backlogged and say it'll be three or four weeks. But, the technician there also said, "Ah, the old Spotmatic, they don't build 'em like that anymore. Those are great and this one is in nearly perfect condition."
He took a prelimiary look see and said, "how long has it been since it was cleaned?"
"I don't think it every has been."
"Are you the original owner?"
"No, it was my father's before me. But he never mentioned cleaning it or anything. It's been all over the world."
"And it shows inside."
"Well, I'll bet that dad took thirty thousand or more frames with it. I'll bet that I've put five or eight thousand more on it."
"Wow. It's been well cared for. It'll do thirty or forty thousand more if we get it cleaned up inside."
So, I'm shut down for a few weeks. I'll have to settle for scanning some of the huge backlog of pictures already taken.
