Cars and TVs are every day use. You can't compare that kind of stuff to a knife. What, are you some cereal killer who needs the latest knife to kill people easier? What do you do with these knives all day?
Hanging on the wall in my other room is a painting by Monet. It's worth $3,500,000. I got picked it up for less than $100 framed and all. Not a bad buy, eh?
How do I know that it's worth $3.5 million? The Portland Art Museum recently paid that much for the exact same painting. Of course, their's is original. Mine's just a print.
So, why did PAM pay three and half mil for that little wall hanging if they could of got the same thing framed and all for less than $100 just like I did? Heck, why did I pay even $100 to cover that spot on the wall? My insurance agent offered me a very nice callendar with pictures of wildflowers for free.
A few years ago, JFK's golf clubs sold for something just over a hundered grand, as I recall. Why? You can get used golf clubs at every other yard sale you see. Why would you spend that much on a set of used golf clubs when, for the same money, you could buy a very nice set of brand-new, custom-fitted clubs AND take an around-the-world trip to play all of the very best courses in the world?
"Why?" is not a question you ask of a collector.
A hundred thousand dollar set of clubs and I'm still slicing. But, then again, what would you expect from a balisong collector?
Now, in the case of the Benchmade 49SPL, it runs just a bit deeper. There were only 25 of these made. There will never be any more. The collectible market for Benchmade knives is well-established. The collectible market for balisongs is well-established. This is a genuine collectible with a serious potential to appreciate (gain value).
Most "collectibles" will never be worth what you pay for 'em. When you the Franklin Mint offering some item in a special, one-time, exclusive, limited-edition of only TWENTY FIVE, yes, that's TWENTY FIVE, just TWENTY FIVE million pieces, run away, run away. But a special edition like the BM49SPL (and the BM49 too) does have serious potential to appreciate considerably. I think that my BM "Final Edition" customs are about the best investment I ever made.
