Check out my cool survival knife tarp!!

Ok, you've been tricked - this post isn't about a cool survival knife, it's about my cool survival tarp! Large rectangular pieces of nylon just aren't as sexy as a knife - but they can be real lifesavers if you need to spend an unexpected night in the woods. Sure, you can take your big chopper and start hacking the forest to build a shelter - but there are plenty of times when this isn't going to be your best option. Like when a fast moving storm is approaching, when you just fell in a cold creek and it'd be better to spend your time building a fire and getting warmed up, when you're injured and your mobility is impaired. Building a shelter takes time and sometimes there are better things to do in a survival situation.

If you're out on the trail with some friends and you get stuck for the night, the coolest guy is not going to be the one with the most expensive knife - the coolest guy is going to be the one with the tarp. If you don't carry a tarp as your part of your outdoor gear, I hope you will in the future.

So here's my cool tarp - I carry it in a belt rig that's available at majorsurplusnsurvival. It's some kind of magazine pouch with three sections - I just cut out the middle divider to fit the tarp inside.

The tarp itself is from campmor - be sure to seam seal the stitch that goes down the center:

Come on man, you know us better than that! Any new piece of gear can be just as cool as a knife  I love the Campmoor catalog, there's always a new thing or two in there that I want. I like that pack too, looks cool.

The Campmor silnylon tarps are a real bargain (although still relatively expensive compared to other tarps.) I have the 8x10 version, and it makes a great backpacking shelter. My wife just made me a 5x9 silnylon tarp last weekend. While some might use such a small tarp for regular use, I wanted this one to throw in a daypack (just in case.) With it's stuff sack, it weighs a 8.4 oz.

Cool little tarp, have you tried setting it up yet? I'd be interested in seeing a pic of that if you ever get bored. It's a worthwhile belt accessory either way, tarps have a lot of uses and when you really need one, it's a pain to have to deal with a 'second best'. Shame they don't have a larger size though...

Oh, what's that scandi on your belt?

Edit- Just found the larger ones! Neat.... Might have to get me one of these...

nice tarp, good belt arrangement it looks like.

personally, i think that those 8.4 oz are much better spent on a tarp on the belt than a big chopper on the belt or in the pack, in terms of being ready for nasty things to happen.

akennedy73,

We're currently building a website called Klippe to compile all sorts of outdoors information from various people. Would you mind if I copied this over there as a review? You can be credited however you like, including links to your own website.

I might just have to pick one of these tarps up...

As I mentioned, my wife sewed my 5x9 tarp, so the edges are hemmed and there are tie points all around the perimeter. While I was researching all this, though, I discovered that the edges don't really need to be hemmed. Apparently, the silicone in the fabric stabilizes the edges to they don't unravel. I found a guy who just bought a piece of 5x9 silnylon fabric and attached a few gripclips. He used it for solo backpacking for months at a time without problem. It would certainly be an inexpensive solution--especially for occasional use or for emerencies. You can buy silnylon here: http://www.questoutfitters.com/coated.html#SILNYLON 1.1 OZ RIPSTOP

Geez, you could have at least thrown in a gratuitous knife photo at the end... :D

Yeah, all I have right now is a massive tarp, like 18X20 or something, I need to make or find a 6X9 one. awsome addition though.

I think the deception was unnecessary. Like tknife said, we can all appreciate all sorts of outdoor gadgets, not just tarps. Sweet setup!

Copy away - the more people who carry tarps when they go outdoors the better!

Oh, what's that scandi on your belt?

It's a Brusletto Troll - great knife! Ragweed's got 'em and there's a less fancy version too called the Profileringskniv

man, that's the great thing about bladeforums - you post a good idea and someone posts something even better  :D

It took me a while to notice the baby, too. Camo cargo pants, the knife and camo pack. All very macho--then I noticed the cute baby socks! :):):)

I've got 4 or 5 Brusletto knives, they're good stuff.
