Hi all,
What do you think of my Trio of sharp stuff for my woods roaming?
I know that Nessmuk liked his little axe, and his fixed blade knife and his 2 bladed pocket knife. I could live with that but give me 2 fixed blades and a little axe and I am even happier lol. I know most if not all of you know about the rule of 3s. 3 cutting tools are like having really 2 cutting tools and having 2 cutting tool is like having really having 1 cutting tool lol. having a few sharp cutting tools is really a great way to roam in the woods.
I just finished up the hatchet this evening. It is made out of 5/32" thick
0-1 steel and has elk antler for the handles it is about 10" long. Here is a in hand shot. of it.
The middle knife is a version of the knife that old time Camper, E. Kreps liked and used for his woods roaming. Kreps liked a clip point on a 4.5" long knife. He liked a little thicker blade though 5/32" thickness. I made this one out of 1/8" thick 0-1 steel. the handle is flared at the end some.
Kreps says in his book on camping skills. That he liked to have a fixed blade that fit into a deep pouch so that only the little bit of the handle showed. He liked the flared end because it was so much easyer to grab with 2 fingers and pull out even if he had gloves on.
Kreps writes that when on the Trap line while checking and setting or resetting traps it is so much easyer to have and use a fixed blade. Kreps really liked to be able to keep his gloves on when he needed to use his knife for a cutting chore. Instead of having to pull off his glove to reach into his pocket and get his pocket knife out and then open the blade do his cutting and then fold his knife back up to put in his pocket and then have to put his glove back on. Any of you who have ever trapped in cold weather know taking your gloves on in winter even for a short time sucks lol.
Here is a in hand pic of my Kreps pattern knife.
And finally my version of Horace Kepharts knife ( seen here with a couple of monster suzz sticks I made for fun)
that I made up a few weeks back. the Kephart knife I will wear on my Belt. The Kreps knife I will put on my pack strap and then the hatchet i will carry inbetween my belt and pants on my left side. I have carried some of my other hatchets that way and just love it. It works for me.
Remeber all I do not really do any back packing an such. I live on a farm in south east Ne. Here at home I have a 1/2 mile by 1 mile long play ground with 2 seperate creeks that meet up at one point ,2 ponds that are nearly a 1/4" mile apart from each other and nice stand of timber to play and practice my skills in and which my campsite is set up at. So carrying my small back pack of food and some other goodies and my water bottle is nothing for a day of playing in the woods. My wife took this pic of me
last Sat. as we both were hiking down to my / our lol campsite to make breakfast ( Eggs, Thickcut beef bacon and then Fry bread Yummy lol.)
After break fast
I wanted to work on some 2 stick dead fall traps that i seen on another forum. here is the 2 dead falls that I made up using that 2 stick set up. It really is a quick freaking dead fall once you get the 2 sticks carved up right.
A log dead fall set up.
And then a rock dead fall set up.
Well anyways I am planning on getting up in the morning and heading to my campsite to cook breakfast again and then play in the woods some and test out my Trio of cutting tools.
I hope you all can get out and spend some time in the woods this weekend.
