Check out this GIANT Bowie

Already gots a Kabar, and its real nice. Wanted something bigger so I got the SP14. Now my neverending compulsion is saying maybe there's something bigger and solider than a SP14. Don't want a sword though. And it needs to be at least 1/4" thick to suit my taste.

You might like to check the Steel article by Joe Talmadge in A.G.Russell's Knife Encyclopedia.

There are a few good companies today turning out seriously massive blades, some pretty expensive, others more affordable: Chris Reeve, Strider, Busse, Swamp Rat, Scrap Yard, and Ranger Knives.

Ranger is especially cooperative in modifying his basic designs to your liking.

Funny you mention that; you might wanna do some research on the Laredo. Tang is a complete joke.

I saw the post where someone described the twisted cable tang. Completely unsuitable for a knife that size, although it would undoubtedly last longer than the POS presented in the original post. How long would it take to come loose under light to moderate chopping?

I don't know if Cold Steel revised the tang with the new steel they're using in the budget version of the Laredo. Probably not, methinks! Sad, 'cause it's such a beautiful looking bowie at a decent price.

Just get a Cold Steel machete. They are big and cheap and will handle a whole lot of abuse. If you do manage to destroy it you can get another one cheap. You don't really need a 1/4" thick blade to have good chopping or cutting qualities. If you do like machetes there are a whole bunch out there that are better than CS for only a little more $.

Esav, thanks for that link, that told me a lot about steel.

Other guys...machetes definitely have their purpose, and eventually I'm going to get one. Right now I'm looking for a large and thick Bowie or Tanto. The Tanto to me is visually stimulating, hence my fascination with the SP14. I guess that's why I'm looking for a Bowie or Tanto...not because of practicality but because of the beauty of it(to me). Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. Thanks for your posts.

I'll check that out Esav...thanks.

Yes Confed, no matter what anybody tells you, generally people are fascinated by BIG things. Perfect examples of these folks are found right in this thread. Take NStricker and Saunterer for example. Now there's some guys who know about size. I'm pretty sure that it matters to them.
Then you got folks who paint stuff on pinheads...To each his own...
