Check out this mpeg of me throwing my ATC Spike Tomahawk!!

WOW LOUIS! If it were 1788 you could Snipe bad guys with hawks on the battlefield! And a 50 foot throw sure made a nice "thunk" sound didn't it!

Wow is right!
Louis ya made it look easy.
Darn you guys I'm still buying knives and now you have me wanting a hawk.

Throwing them looks cool, but I don't have that many opportunities to be out in the country. I have a feeling if I tried throwing one in Prospect Park (Brooklyn) I might have some explaining to do. On the other hand if I got one of those Peace Pipes I could use it every night.

Is there such a thing as a pipe you can smoke and throw?... Not at the same time of course.

Thanks for the comments guys. Phil, if you ever want to throw just drop me an email and we can set something up. You will be addicted after the very first "Thunk".

I want one too! Nice throw Louis! Have you been practicing for very long? I've never tried it; it seems like it would be pretty difficult to get the distance/spins/arc just right.

Phil,
You can throw pipe hawks, but you need to use a pipe hawk that is made to do both. Historically speaking, pipe hawks weren't generally thrown, but they can be made to do so. We can make a pipe hawk with a beefier bowl and hickory haft that could be thrown or smoked. Generally, I include an extra handle as well. We have been revamping our drift and handles with a more aggresive taper at the head so it can withstand the kind of abuse that throwing entails. We are also now driving our handles in with over 2,000 pounds of force to ensure a tight fit.
Throwing tomahawks is a lot of fun!

Oh great Ryan now that I know you can make one to do both I have no excuse not to get one. Except for not having the $$$.

The extra handle is a nice touch, but wouldn't it be a problem for the owner to do the replacement? It sounds like that sucker is going to be on there pretty good.

John,

I have had the ATC 'hawk for a couple of weeks. I have been throwing 'Hawks for a total of roughly 2-3 months.

Phil,
The handle is not that difficult to knock out and replace. Normally, we push the handles in with a lot of force, but on the hawks with interchangeable handles, we put them on with a nice snug fit that can be knocked out. Remember that these are tapered eyes - so that the taper holds the haft in.

Hey Lou...

I've had an interest in Hawks for quite some time..

Quite honestly,,the video was very cool,, and definately had an impact on me Wanting one in a bad way...

Brings back images in my mind of the movie Patriot, which was also a cool couple of scenes...

Would like to see more..

Phil, Ryan inset the decorations on my Plains War Hatchet (not a pipe hawk though) so they wouldn't interfere with changing handles. As he described, the tapered eye holds the handle snugly enough for work or play yet allows them to be easily interchanged.

Louis, you're right about hawk tossing being addictive. I took some time in the pouring rain this past weekend to set up a formal target at our camp -- 12" or so diameter logs, set up in triangle fashion (four on the bottom, then 3, 2 & 1 on top). I then stacked another dozen or so logs behind & perpendicular to these for support. My wife even got into it & scored a perfect bull's eye on her second throw. For now, I'm quite happy getting that satisfying THUNK from normal ranges but, maybe, someday...

Awesome Louis!

I feel like Phil, way to many knives I want and now Hawks. I am sitting here thinking about having body armor made for my mutts so I can have a moving target. On second thought I better join Phil with the peacepipe and think hard about that one.
