An ENOURMOUS Timber Rattlesnake! :D (By the way, I like snakes so this was really cool!) I have seen many in my day and this one was huge. He doesn't look like it in this cell phone picture but he is. He was about 15 feet from the cabin and luckily we had snake tongs and a snake hook in the cabin. The tongs were about useless though as they wouldn't open wide enough to really grab hold. Anyway, we put him in a trash can, which he was actually long enough to get out of if I hadn't stopped him, and took him a ways down the road and released him.

So keep an eye out where your walking.;)

That's really cool, mrnewberry. There are lots of rattlers (not timber rattlers, though) around here this time of year. I haven't seen any yet, but I'm keeping my eyes open (I like snakes).

Very cool find!

I have not seen a Timber rattler in the wild as of yet.

I am in no way scared of snakes -- but I AM scared of Rattle Snakes. I don't know why, but this is the only snake that scares me

We was really calm. He never tried to strike, never freaked out, and only barely rattled after we had been handling him for several minutes and had relocated him.

Awesome!!! Glad to hear that you didn't kill him on sight. It makes me angry and sad all at the same time when folks kill a snake, or anything else, for no reason.

Rattleers really scare me when I see them swimming. The rattles won't rattle until they dry out! So,if you're trout fishing and see one in the river, when you get out,you really have to wonder! Big + time for a wading staff! LOL

Very cool info, I never knew the wet rattle issue, thanks.
Also it is good of you not killing the snake on sight!

Yowza! That is big!

My little brother had three timbers in his menagerie- none of them was that big. It was kinda cool, though, because he had the three different color phases represented (Dark/black; Natural/olive or green and Light/yellow) He also always wanted a canebrake rattler. The "Natural" was the only one he caught wild- the others he bought or traded for.

Great experience for you! Thanks for sharing, and for treating the snake responsibly.

Ive seen numerous copperheads, Western Diamondbacks, and black snakes and cottonmouths, but never a timber rattler....

Cool find!!!

That's cool. There was a news article a few weeks ago about a huge diamondback that was killed on a farm in central FL. It was something like 78lbs and over 9' long.

Can you imagine how old it was? Stupid farmer should have just called fish/wildlife to come get it. It beat the record for largest diamondback.

I think they are great tasting battered and fried.
Seriously,it's a good thing you did and a cool pic!

Beautiful, we get the Eastern Diamond Back, and Timber, but I haven't seen any of the Timber Rattlers this far south. See a few Pygmys and the occasional Water Moccasin.

I haven't killed a snake since I was about 10 years old, the only ones I'll kill now are the invasive Burmese Python, in 2006-2007 alone, more than 418 snakes were captured and removed or found dead in the Everglades National Park, and estimates of more than 10,000 snakes may be out there.

While it's nothing too exciting I have a pet ball python named Pretzel. Big fan of snakes here as well. :)

Damn!!! I'm working this season with Timbers with four other Biologists and thats the biggest one I've ever seen. Great find!

Great pics! I love snakes and most 'fearsome' creatures that people are afraid of are just trying to get along like everyone else. I believe in respect and teach my kids the same thing. The only times I have shot them on sight is directly around my house. I don't mess around with anything near my kids.

We was really calm. He never tried to strike, never freaked out, and only barely rattled after we had been handling him for several minutes and had relocated him.

Maybe he had escaped from a Snake Handling church and he was so happy to be handled without all the loud music and speaking in tongues he was friendly.

Seriously though nice snake. I haven't seen a rattlesnake in the woods since the 1970"s
