Check out what I found by the cabin!

I won't lie, I woulda killed it on site and then cooked it up, I haven't had rattler yet.

An ENOURMOUS Timber Rattlesnake!

Are you sure that's a rattlesnake? Did you actually see the rattles? Do you have a photo of them?

The head does not look like a rattlesnake - it looks more like some variety of king snake or something. Rattlesnakes have very broad, heavy, triangular heads.

No mistaking it this was definitely a timber rattlesnake. I had the opportunity to work a little bit with them in college so I am quite sure and it did indeed have rattles. And very long ones at that I estimated there to be around 15 segments which is very impressive as they generally break off before that length.

Md 25v What kind of work are you doing with the timbers?

p.s. I sent a picture to Dr. Beaupre a Biologist who works with timber rattlesnakes in this region. Assuming his email address is still the same.

That's a really cool find. However, I'm glad he's in your neck of the woods.I'm happy with the garter snakes we have here in eastern Canada.Fat,slow and not fatal to humans though they do bite hard.

I have never seen a timbler rattler , although they are common here. Ive even looked for them.

Their camouflage is amazing! I went along a couple of times when they were tracking timber rattlesnakes with radio transmitters in them and you would often get to where you knew he was probably like five or ten feet away and they would still be difficult to spot.

Fun! Thanks for sharing!

My dad hated snakes and killed everyone he ever saw.

I never understood people who kill snakes for no reason. Just walk around them or send them on their way unless they're on a playground or in a backyard tha has kids, IMHO.

Maybe he had escaped from a Snake Handling church and he was so happy to be handled without all the loud music and speaking in tongues he was friendly.

Seriously though nice snake. I haven't seen a rattlesnake in the woods since the 1970"s

His name is Methusulah, and we've been wondering where he went. He's been rather peevish ever since we added the accordion to the band.;)

I have to say I detest snakes, they really freak me out. Irrational (largely, I know as I like lizards and spiders etc) I dislike their stealth and do not like coming across them in the wild-even though they must be more scared than I am. But I refrain from killing them provided they do me no harm, we've destroyed their world and habitats enough around the globe. Full marks to you for catching the snake and moving it to safety, i did the same last week with a couple of bats that had fallen down our chimney. The extinction of species/fauna impoverishes our world.

BRAVO!!!

GOOD ON YOU FOR KEEPING HIM ALIVE! Even better having the Tongs in the truck. I don't use my tongs any more on the count of having the same experience, they barely work. My stump ripper has seen a few snakes this month safely to the side of the road. You are in Arkansas, are you seeing darker variations when you go North?

oNCE again I'm happy and surprised to see how many people here agree on keeping snakes one sees, alive.

I haven't killed a snake since I was about 10 years old, the only ones I'll kill now are the invasive Burmese Python, in 2006-2007 alone, more than 418 snakes were captured and removed or found dead in the Everglades National Park, and estimates of more than 10,000 snakes may be out there.

What, you mean these lil ol thangs? They are now radio tracking the big ones, so they don't want people to kill them.... The other herpers are going nuts. Those are about the only snakes that snake enthusiasts want to kill

Joe, Try the Gentle Giant series from Midwest. We switched over to them and its like night and day. There's a 2 1/2 in wide jaw for even support and a spring inside the tube to prevent putting to much pressure on the snake. They old school tongs (pilstrom style) made snakes flip out but the G.G. tongs are great and the snakes stay calm.

Yeah, Every one of my friends has those but me. I'm just too cheap to get 'em right now. I already broke my old titanium tip stump ripper from furmont.

Damn, you broke a furmont!!! I have the pro-field-hook from midwest. It's kinda the same but the furmont is nicer. After I broke it, I made a super stump ripper by having a machine shop put a 90deg bend in a thin crowbar and re-temper it. I attached it to a fill sized shovel handle and cut the whole thing down to 50 inches. I think I will break before it does.

I went that route too. In the future, I may be trying to get Condor to make a crazy tough snake hook :) But until then, I'll use my modified hoe.
