So after seeing people posting thier custom ferro rods with antler, micarta, wood etc for the handle, I got to thinking,

and this is what I came up with:

just drilled it, mixed up some JB weld and let it sit overnight. I figure when the fatwood wears down I can sand it off and replace it.

let me know what you think

I do some custom firesteels with G-10 and various other handles materials. They include a block of fatwood. I've often thought about doing this for the practicality of it. One idea I've had is to make a sheath out of fatwood as part of the set. May have to pursue that one some more.

Looks good and very functional.

Looks like a great idea. Sparks and tinder in one package. Fatwood is lighter and, I hear, easier to use than magnesium.

Good idea.
Also, I like the "sheath" idea posted above. Would be about the easiest thing to make ever, Just need a drill & a solid chunk of fatwood!

Nicely done.

I was trying to locate some fatwood thick enough to do something similar. The pieces I have are long and thin so I whittled them down a bit then duct taped 3 pieces together throwing in a piece of 550 cord as a handle. This way I have tinder, about 5 feet of duct tape and a 12 inch piece of 550 cord handy all in one.
I saved the shavings and compressed them into a small block which when unraveled gives me enough tinder for a good 5 fires.

I thought of doing that, but I get sick of having sticky hands. I ended up just lashing a piece of fatwood with a hole drilled in it to my firesteel. But yours is looking handsome!

Is there any way to get around the fatwood being sticky?? Maybe wipe it down with mineral spirits or something?
