I got a package of 440c ss balls from MSC a few days back. To my sur---prize they were soft as lead. I tried heat treating them also. NOPE they were 316 or sump thin.
I call and the customer service got new ones out asap.
They are fine. They said there must have been a bin mix up.

checked mine there fine, michael, the balls are used in the detent on liner locks when you close a liner lock it should click shut and not wiggle this keeps the blade shut, that little ball is in the lock bar, in the closed position it slides into a small hole in the blade.

Tom, if the knife is a wall hanger, the chrome will never wear off. If it is a using knife, and most of my knives are, then the constant pressure of the ball on the tang of the knife will not allow rust to form.

In the 6 years I have been making Liner Locks
(Thank you Kit) I have had some knives returned for various reasons. None have been
returned due to the detent ball being rusted.
These are the same balls that Reese Weiland of Custom Kraft sells. The only difference is about 5 cents a ball. ;^)

As for the chrome balls these are 52100 . in the early days I used a few of them and was surprized that they didnt rust. Now I use the 440c. I know the stain resistance is much better. 52100 chrome balls are 15.00 per 800 peices at motion industries. The ss are a bit more expensive but I feel better knowing that they wont rust in the years to come.

My balls are blue ! I tried to return them as I thought there must be something wrong and the sales lady told me that it's quite common if there not used regularly and that they need a detent to work best !

Just checked them...noticed that they have a flat spot on them! could this be because of wear from usage?

Dexter are you sure that flat spot isnt on you ars from carrying 3 tons of hiddout knives and dragging it around?

Kit how did you check those balls with a hardness tester ? I used my shop ball penis merham.
