Checkering file usage (push or push and pull)

Question: Do checkering files need to be used only on the push stroke or can you cut on the push and pull strokes?

They are made to cut on the push stroke.

I treat checkering files like my other files..push cut ,lift,repeat.

Since all the answers above are correct I will add pulling a file back does nothing but dull the file prematurely.
