For those of you who may have noticed, I dropped off the face of the forums (but not the planet, thank God) for a brief while.

Two words: Police Academy.

Our drill instructor is a former marine DI who has, apparently, not yet come to grips with the fact that he is no longer in the Corps. Thus, we are kept pretty darned busy. On the plus side are the facts that I'm getting in pretty good physical shape and I have an alternative career as a shoe-shiner should this whole cop thing not work out. Will spit-shine for food. Yeah.

I wanted to give Uncle Bill a (very) belated report on how the Village Khuk I received performed on a camping trip a while back. It did very very well...we had several saws and axes as well as a numer of small hatchets, so we were not wanting for wood-prepping equipment. Naturally everyone used saws and axes for the heavy work, but whenever something hatchet-sized was needed, everyone seemed to opt for the khuk rather than the hatchets. It just seemed more handy. Plus, it also got good and soaked on a hike in the rain and, with minimal care, has not shown any signs of rust.

Great to have you back, Mike, and happy to hear you survived police boot camp.

Well, not quite 'survived.' 'Surviving' would be a more accurate term. Graduation is slated for mid-november. So far so good, though.

Another bonus. Fat (comparatively) paychecks and an upcomming fit of HIKV. The villager put it into remission, but I saw pictures of the grey-handled Sirupati and I started to twitch.

Good luck Mike. It's always good to get new blood into the system. Always remember your oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States and you will do fine.

I'll pass o a bit of advice that wa given to me by my FTO in the city. When the badge gets too heavy for your chest it's time to find another line of work. Think about it. If t's not clear now, it will be after a little while on the job.

Try to find a department that will allow you to carry a khurkri on your belt!!!

Congrats Mike,we need more of us in the ranks. There is no such thing as an ex Marine.

No, Bill. Just the ones who like khukuris. My cousins on the force are Jimmy, Vinny, Homer and Richard.

St. Michael is the patron saint of policemen so the name Mike is reserved for only the best cops. (ha ha)

Very well said, Mike. I had an uncle and a couple of cousins who were Chicago area cops. Best I ever did was a little Shore Patrol duty in Newport almost 50 years ago.

The best that I did in the service was to beat the heck out of two MP`s and take their jeep. The motor pool painted new numbers and we had an extra.Had I been in a bad mood I could have easily killed them.Wasn`t their day to die.Actually that wasn`t the best.More to follow.

ghost, you continue to amaze me with your mil antics. I'd still be serving time in the brig if I'd tried something like that.

I was in Saigon to see a doc at 3rd.Surge for one of my concussions, maybe several at that time.I had some time so,I went on a SEAL Swift boat mission I knew a guy from jump school.I went through their basic S.C.U.B.A. course in Key West while AWOL from Ft.Benning.Benning never missed me.I was just waiting for assignmentThe SEAL LT. would have covered me..They got me back for my appointment, and I was refered to 99th.Evac. in Long Binh.Time enough for a chopper flight lesson over contested territory.Thanks,19th.Aviation and the UH-1B.I met Nuyen Cao Ky at the VNAF O-Club on that trip. His wife was wearing a matching flight suit with out his well earned decorations.I was hanging around the docks and a NCO asked me if I was there to pick up the DK12 Generator.Of course I was.It came with a duece and a half truck.I drove that sucker back to Cu Chi and reported to LTC.Mike Barze. We set up the generater and painted out the numbers on the truck. The INF.(ABN) strikes again. The boats had twin 40MM`s.I had a good time cutting down trees with them.
