• Happy Thanksgiving to all of you! I hope that you all have something to be grateful for this year and for many years to come
  • America has reached 250 years, and I am grateful to be here, in the best country in the world. Thank every one of you who helps make this country a better place, those who have gone before and risked it all, and those who've paid the ultimate price to make the United States what we are today.

Happy Birthday America! Let Freedom Ring for all time!

Checking steel For flaws

Are you inspecting flat bar or are you asking about a knife blade made from 5160?

This steel, 5160 has been around for decades, its a very rugged steel and makes great carbon steel blades. I've made many.

Most of all, if the steel was purchased from a reputable dealer all you need to check is how true the bar stock is especially across the bar. You will lose a lot of steel when the bar is cupped. Length wise as long as the bar is not twisted you will be fine. Make sure you know if the bar is annealed [soft].

I have the heat treat info if its needed.

Fred

If you were concerned about cracks you could use dye penetrant. I would not think medium carbon steels would be a problem though.
