Anyone have both of these?
I'd love to hear a comparison - specs handling characteristics, whatever strikes you fancy!

Hi Patrick,
I am lucky enough to have on each of the Cheetlang and Reiger.
The Cheetlang is about 18"long and very fast and agile in the hand. It feels guite a bit lighter than the Reiger, but not too light. It chops well on lighter small stuff,3" and under I find it quite perfect. You need to develope a certian hold on the handle so the back of it does not bite your hand while chopping. Once you find this hold it is a joy to swing. This one feels more like a weapon than a tool. It is a beautiful knife to own. One of my favorites!!
The Reiger on the other hand is very weight forward and is a real super chopper.
It is around 19" plus a little. I am at work and do not have them here to actually measure. The deep bend of the blade on the Reiger and the thick powerful blade make it a true powerhouse to use in the field. The American style of handle is real nice to hold on to . I find that it is a bit on the thick side as far as handles go and tends to test your grip strength more than the slim handle of the Cheetlang, but this is not really strange, as the handle on my 18" AK is a very full grip also. I suppose the Kamis make the handle girth acording to the heft of the blade. Or mabe it is just feel that each one goes by. If you are trying to decide between the two as to which one you would want to buy. Reiger is chopping tool to me. The Cheetlang is a speedy tool of defence. IMO that is.. Take Care and Later All................

Thanks ArchAngel,
I already have a Cheetlang, and was just wondering how the Reiger compared. It may be a future purchase. Anyway the forum's been so quiet lately, I wanted to see if I could get some sort of conversation going.

ArchAngel,
Thanks again for the detailed description. I'm going to Alaska for a short field assignment (yeah, my job sucks

), and I've been trying to decide what to take along the Cheetlang or another K. The Reiger sounds like it might be a bit too chunky for me.

I'll be carrying a 18" machete as well, so I guess I won't need the Cheetlang's speed. I guess it's a choice of the 16" Panawal I got direct from Lalit, or my WWII.

Bearcub,
I have NO idea what's going on. Maybe folks are just on vacation, but things seem lively enough on other forums. I sure hope things liven up again!

Patrick,
You may find the Reiger a little heavy, It ia a 2lb plus blade. That does make it a little on the heavy side compaired to our Cheetlangs. But the thing really can chop. It might be a good replacement for a machete and hatchet, both. It does both jobs quite well. That helps reduce the amout of items carried. I always think that way, then carry too much afield anyway. My mind thinks that I can still hump a big pack, my body at times begs to differ. Have fun up in the big wood. Hope you have some adventures to share with us upon your return. Safe Trip...

Patrick,
If I were lucky enough to be making that trip, I'd take the Cheetlang and leave the machete at home. But if you're going to take a machete and a khukuri, I'd vote for the WWII. Have a great time, and let us hear about the highlights.

Berkley,
A machete is considered standard field equipment for an ecologist. I'd probably feel off balance without one. Not that they're all that useful against the blackberries around here! I keep changing brands and lengths, trying to find one that actually works!

If we get the contract (early July), I'll start a thread with the highlights.

Well, they decided not to do the Alaska job this year

. Oh well, that's another week to watch for specials on the forum!
