Chemically removing the heat treatment carbon

I have one blade that I didn't finish off due to it being stolen with the last burglary attempt. Well it was deemed useless by the thief and chucked into some bushes and found by my son a few weeks back. Coated with rust I dumped it into general cleaner handy-Andy and scoured it with wire wool. It has a lovely pitting and lines. (also I am not that hot with polishing). So over the past period I would bury it in the damp part of the garden and water with a little salt and a lot of lemon. Every so often I dig it up and do it over again. Although the rust only returns in small spots it is a bind and the mutt has taken to relocating it (fun dad).

What can I use to get the last of that carbide coating off chemically?

Carbide? Not sure I understand. Is there a reason you can't just grind the rust off?

Rob!

he is talkin about the carbon that builds up on the blade as scale after heat treating.

try soaking it in warm Vinegar and use scotch brite after.

Thanks Rusty,

I can grind it off but this one blade has a particularly nice pitting pattern, a shame to waste it. I will, however grind the cutting edges.

I will try the vinegar this afternoon.
