Chicago auction

Hi Lorien,

Interesting? No.

The individual was trying to sell a $575.00 knife for $1150...for a 100% profit.

Note, this particular Emerson is not at the top of the "most sought after list".

Can this type of knife sell for that type of money? Yes, but the buyer will not be found on Blade Forum.

As we saw over time the price plummeted to just over a 50% profit at $875.00

Still not takers.

Is the knife overpriced for its particular "rung" on the Emerson Folder market? Yes.

What other factors could affect the sale?

Take the Auction in Chicago...perhaps people were going to wait to see what other Emerson's were available.

As well Mr. Emerson was scheduled to attend the Tactical Invitational. Again, buyers waiting to see what would be available there.

Now lets move ahead to Dallas in less than 2 weeks...who is scheduled to attend Why Mr. Emerson of course.

Lots of opportunities there as well to get a knife at retail.

Lets move ahead to the Plaza Cutlery Show in October, where once again Mr. Emerson is scheduled to attend. Again, another opportunity to get the knife at retail.

The lesson here is two fold:

1) Do your homework

2) Timing.

Just because a hot makers name is on the knife, does not mean you will be able to get double or so it seems even a 50% premium.

Les thanks for sharing all of this real world non biased knowledge with us.

yeah, but I like getting some of them from you:)

I put on the auction. Here is the story.

1. If you were the high bidder in the room, you paid a buyers premium of
10%. If you were the high internet bidder, you paid a buyers premium
of 12%.

2. The Stelath sold for $3600 plus 10% = $3960

3.. 21 lots did not sell.

4.. Total sales were greater than last year.

5.. There was considerably more internet bidding this year over last year.

5. We made a mistake by putting too many Emersons in the auction.

thank you all for your participation.

When 21% of the items in an auction, any auction, do not sell, obviously the reserves (expectations) of the consignors were too high.

Sorry to come late into this thread, but here is a pic of some of the Emersons sold at auction...With one exception, these are all Emerson Pre-Tac Halfmoons. The exception is the Viper logoed Viper (Black Micarta.)

This was taken post-auction, in the bar at the hotel, basically on the floor.

Enjoy!
