May be in Chi town next week. Would love to stop somewhere that has a great selection of folders. Especially more traditional ones.

Any suggestions?

As big as the city is, we don't have much here in terms of knife shops. The best I can recommend is Northwestern Cutlery, but they don't carry traditionals and the store is geared toward kitchen knives. However, they stock a decent selection of Spydercos and Benchmades.

Yeah Chicago is my favorite big city (I only live 4 hours away) but I'm often surprised by what I can't find there!

No proper soup dumplings!

I'm in the western burbs and Cabelas and Bass Pro Shops are the only places I've found where you can handle knives and their traditional selection is pretty much Buck, Case and the blister pack imports.

Gat Guns has a good selection of modern stuff but there about an hour west (with traffic). prices are what you'd expect from a brick and mortar gun shop in a "high-rent" area.

Chicago is very anti knife. Anti gun and generally anti fun. I only know of one dedicated knife shop that sells a lot of traditionals but its actually 2 hours west in Rockford. And even then is a small shop not really worth the drive. I think what bothers me most is that even if you do find a place that sells knives retail they are usually asking MSRP. I live about an hour outside of downtown. And I do all my shopping online. To many disappointments at the brick and mortars around here.

I'd suggest getting some stuffed pizza, or even better, Mexican food. Maybe a walk on the Mag Mile and by the lake. Knife shopping? Forget it.

Are you a native? I'm not (Iowan) and even I won't eat Chicago pizza. NY style is the only pizza.

I'm hitting Publican just for the pork skins alone. Might not be able to avoid Al's #1 though.

Well I'm sure neither is as good as Iowa pizza.

Fine dining in downtowny/tourist Chicago is a very good bet. "Chicago" food in downtowny/tourist Chicago isn't. I'd avoid Al's. FoodTV tourist trap. While not the best Portilllo's will give you a good approximation of a Chicago dog or Italian beef. Probably your best bet.

But, again, knives? Forget it.

Have fun!

Kind of getting off topic but oh well!

I've been to Al's, Johnny's and probably half dozen of the other old places. I still think Al's edges them out but Johnny's is a close second. Portillos is actually very good and way more convenient (stay away from the tamales though! yikes). I was going to Al's way before FoodTV BTW.

Too bad about the knives situation. Shoot.

Up until recently I lived 15 min away from GAT Guns for my entire life. I didn't go in there often because I didn't appreciate the bad attitude of some their counter staff. I never even realized they carried a selection of knives. I might need to stop in there to see what they have the next time I'm home.

Johnnys beef is the way to go. And yeah no good knife shopping place. Sorry.

Terrible customer service at GAT...

Gun prices are competitive...

Knife prices are ASTRONOMICAL. The only thing their knife counter is good for is looking at something you might consider buying online. Good luck finding an employee to open the case for you though

So it wasn't just me. :p

Maybe a bunch of us need to go in and open a cutlery store in the Chicago area. Lord knows there are enough cooks and high dollar restaurant chefs around. ;)

Chicago has great Japanese food and hot dogs, but their style of pizza...:)
