Nice knife eh?..........what?.... the wood, yeah thats ok too i guess.

Are you freaking kidding me!!!! Isn't it gorgeous!! I got two big chunks of this and it even looks better in person.
So now what should i do? How do you guys decide how to cut it up?
I want to send it to WSSI to be stabilized but should I send them whole or cut them into blocks and if so what is the best size?
How dry should the wood be before i send it away?

Wow, I am so jealous!!! If you look at it, you can see skulls all over in the pattern! I WANT SOME!!! Where did you get it at?

Beautiful!

How dry is it? Stabilization wants 10% or less (preferably less), so you may need to keep it for a while.

K&G wants max dimensions of 2 X 4 (?) x 10, don't know WSSI's limits.

that little mini knife makes that block look huge ;)

nice wood you got there looks like more then a few handles

This Block is about 10"x12"x2 1/2" thick. The other one is almost the same size.
I got it off $bay and havent seen any this nice since. I do not know the moisture content yet but I think I will order a moisture meter. I have several other burls coming soon and I think they are not as dry as this.
It feels like about 15 to 20% but it is hard to tell because I have no experiance with this amboyna wood. Not a lot of it grows around here;) . Its definately the nicest chunk of burl I have ever seen. :D
When I get it stabilized I might have to sell a couple pieces just to finance some of the other burl i just ordered.:o

Butch, That knife I got from you is awesome in the kitchen. It just keeps on cutting.

Bruce, I never posted in your dagger thread but I have to tell you how in awe I am of pretty much everthing you do.:D

I see some serious imperfections in that wood.... nope....not good enough for knife handles at all.

Go ahead and send it to me for disposal....:D

I sometimes send Mike at WSSI big blocks like that, but I wouls suggest you cut them into 5X12X2.5 blocks. That way you just slice off scales and blocks from the stabilized piece. If you want longer scales/blocks, cut it 6X10X2.5.

Your post reminded me that I have to get a hundred or so pounds off to WSSI.

That almost looks like it was cut green and sealed. It is a beautiful block nonetheless. I would say weigh it now and weigh it in a month and see what the change is.

I've been looking around myself for nice slabs of burl on eBay and in the woods as well. Much harder to find in the woods :)

Alot of what you get on eBay is cut green and sealed bowl blocks. I'm not sure if that was listed as a bowl block, but if it was, it is most likely pretty green yet.

Good luck,
Alex

I blew my chicken eye out on that stuff! Amazing figure...wonderful score!

You mind telling us what is cost ya? Ballpark? and who on e-bay you got it from?

This piece was $150.00, I got it from a guy called exoticwoods, I havent seen any this nice since though. Im sure more is around. When i got it some of the stuff bid up over $300 way more than i was gonna spend.

Sorry about that chicken eye Kerry hope it heals up for ya;) If ya could coon finger it you would see how dense it is.

Frank, Im sure there is plenty for a folder or two, If only i could get out to see ya. Shoot I just will have to make the time.

Kelly,
I would really like to have you visit. I might be able to show you a most simple set up that makes grinding most blades so very easy. No guys I'm sorry but I don't do pictures as Kelly will verify. Frank
